Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A robust challenge to traditional evangelical assumptions about humanity's 'dominion' over the animal world, arguing for a biblical ethic of animal liberation. Why should Christians care about animals Is there a biblical basis for abstaining from eating animals Is avoiding companies that use (and misuse) animals a viable way for Christians to live out the message of God Sarah Withrow King makes the argument that care for all of creation is no 'far-fetched' idea that only radical people would consider, but rather a faithful witness of the peaceful kingdom God desires and Jesus modelled. This includes all living and breathing creatures that share this earth with us. King uses her decade-plus of experience as a vegan, her seminary education, her evangelical Christian faith, and her years working with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to call Christians to examine how we treat and view the nonhuman animals with whom we share a finite planet.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - An exploration of the life, work and cultural influence of the writer and publisher Arthur Mee, best known for founding The Children's Encyclopaedia.Arthur Mee (1875-1943), best remembered as the creator of The Children's Encyclopaedia, was more than a popular editor, journalist and travel writer; for a generation of young readers and their parents, the name Arthur Mee truly meant something. For many in his audience, the narratives and discourses embedded within his writing tied together and legitimised a trinity of beliefs that lay at the heart of his nonconformist faith and character: God, England and Empire.Despite the enormous appeal of his many published works, which during the first half of the twentieth century saw him become a household name and a major publishing brand, Mee has remained an ethereal figure. In Arthur Mee, the first full-length account of Mee's life since 1946, Crawford draws upon a range of Mee's correspondence to offer for the first time a realistic picture of the man at work and at home as an antidote to the overly romanticised image attached to his name. The book places Mee's work within the wider cultural, political and social context of an England undergoing unparalleled societal change and technological advancement. Scholars of the history of education, children's literature and beyond will find much of interest in these pages, and childhood devotees to Mee's publications may well find themselves transported back to a time of wonder, imagination and hope.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A critical assessment of the influence of the American 'Health, Wealth and Prosperity' movement on contemporary British evangelical and charismatic churches. Many twenty-first-century evangelical charismatics in Britain are looking for a faith that works. They want to experience the miraculous in terms of healings and Godsent financial provision. Many have left the mainstream churches to join independent charismatic churches led by those who are perceived to have special insights and to teach principles that will help believers experience the miraculous. But all is not rosy in this promised paradise, and when people are not healed or they remain poor they are often told that it is because they did not have enough faith. This study discovers the origin of the principles that are taught by some charismatic leaders. Glyn Ackerley identifies them as the same ideas that are taught by the positive confession, health, wealth, and prosperity movement, originating in the United States. The origins of the ideas are traced back to New Thought metaphysics and its background philosophies of subjective idealism and pragmatism. These principles were imported into the UK through contact between British leaders and those influenced by American 'word of faith' teachers. Glyn Ackerley explains the persuasiveness of such teachers by examining case studies, suggesting their 'miracles' may well have social and psychological explanations rather than divine origins.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A significant study of the writings of the Chinese Muslim scholar Liu Zhi and his innovative role in contextualising Islamic texts for a Chinese audience.Liu Zhi (c.1662-c.1730), a well-known Muslim scholar writing in Chinese, published outstanding theological works, short treatises, and short poems on Islam. While traditional Arabic and Persian Islamic texts used unfamiliar concepts to explain Islam, Liu Zhi translated both text and concepts into Chinese culture. In this erudite volume, David Lee examines how Liu Zhi integrated the basic religious living of the monotheistic Hui Muslims into their pluralistic Chinese culture. Liu Zhi discussed the Prophet Muhammad in Confucian terms, and his work served as a bridge between peoples. This book is an in-depth study of Liu Zhi's contextualization of Islam within Chinese scholarship that argues his merging of the two never deviated from the basic principles of Islamic belief.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A Festschrift for the British New Testament scholar Andrew T. Lincoln, elaborating on his major interests, such as the reception of biblical texts.A number of distinguished biblical scholars and theologians come together in this volume to honour the work of Andrew T. Lincoln. Here, scholars converse with Lincoln's work, engaging with his monographs, Born of a Virgin and Truth on Trial. These essays examine a wide range of topics such as N.T. Wright's exploration of demonic politics in John and the significance of wine to the Holy Spirit in Ephesians by Lloyd K. Pietersen. These theological interpretations go so far as to question the foundations that make New Testament theology what it is today, with experts like Loveday Alexander and John Goldingay confronting sexuality, spirituality, ethics and memory in Lincoln's work with sensitivity and nuance.…
