In this book, the first of its kind, the author examines the mathematical contributions of many African peoples in the context of their social and economic development. This study, a product of years of research in the traditional mathematics of Africa south of the Sahara, is based on personal interviews with both African and non-African scholars, on a study of African literature, art and other aspects of African culture, and on written works in many disciplineshistory, economics, ethnology, anthropology, archaeology, and linguistics.
