Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Shaped by his childhood experiences in Japan and his study of Mono-ha, Ha Chong-hyun's career underscores the twin developments of modern Japanese and Korean artKorean artist Ha Chong-hyun (born 1935) has had a deep and enduring relationship with Japan, from his early years in Kansai to his first solo exhibition in Tokyo, introduced by his longstanding colleague Lee Ufan. His engagement with the Japanese avant-garde--particularly Mono-ha--shaped his early practice before he transitioned into the monochrome paintings that defined his role in Dansaekhwa. Featuring new essays alongside critical writings from past exhibition catalogs, this volume examines Ha's exhibitions at Muramatsu, Kamakura and other key Japanese galleries, as well as his lasting friendships with figures such as Lee and Nobuo Sekine. Archival materials, rare photographs and documentation from Japanese museum collections further illuminate Ha's impact and presence in Japan from the 1970s to the 2000s. More than a study of one artist, this book reveals the cross-cultural currents that connected Korean and Japanese modern art.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Filled with quirky, playful exhibition photographs, this Nara catalog surveys the translation of his signature rebellious aesthetic to statues in bronze and clayDocumenting Yoshitomo Nara's 2025 exhibition at BLUM Los Angeles, My Imperfect Self traces the artist's turn toward bronze sculpture and the poetic potential of imperfection. Including a newly commissioned essay by art historian Yeewan Koon, this book brings together recent works, preparatory drawings and playful photographs of children, dogs and elders--figures that reflect Nara's ongoing curiosity about innocence, experience and emotional depth. It also features 11 mid-size head sculptures exuding a quirky strangeness and dark charm that defines the artist's work. Although cast in bronze, they were first made in clay as palm size pieces. In their transformed state, the malleable nature of the clay's original form remains evident, enticing viewers to retrace Nara's touch across its pillowy surface. These heads, presented for the first time, are integral to Nara's exploration in clay, intertwining ideas and techniques developed since 2011, but also express a poignant return to his roots. Seen together, all the featured works highlight how far Nara has transformed the kawaii aesthetic into an alternate realm of beguiling misfits.Yoshitomo Nara was born in 1959 in Aomori, Japan, and graduated with a master's degree from Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music and later studied at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. His drawings and paintings are informed by a range of influences, from manga and anime to punk rock. He has also worked in sculpture, ceramic and large-scale installation.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Recent works from the Danish artist transmuting religious archetypes into imaginative new scenariosThis monograph highlights the recent work of Copenhagen-based artist Alexander Tovborg (born 1983). Documenting Tovborg's work across painting, drawing and sculpture from the last two years, this publication illuminates the artist's deep knowledge of religious symbolism and archetypes-concepts that inform his multidisciplinary art, personal life and ideology. His research into the origins and contemporary iterations of symbology, mysticism and religious archetypes has yielded varied bodies of work that span subjects such as the hallucinogenic and erotic first meeting of Adam and Eve; the lost adolescence of Jesus Christ; and a wedding procession of paintings representing the marriage of heaven and hell, among others.Through newly commissioned texts, including a critical essay, poem, a short story and an interview with the artist, this volume introduces readers to Tovborg's rigorously researched, imaginative art.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A compact accordion book offering a prismatic tour through one of Mark Grotjahn's quintessential seriesIn this publication, Mark Grotjahn's (born 1968) collectively titled 50 Kitchens drawings are presented in an accordion-folded, pocket-size catalog. 50 Kitchens documents a group of drawings, created over the span of five years, all in the same size and format to comprise a singular work of art. Shown at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in May 2018 under the same title, each of the drawings is done in Grotjahn's signature 'butterfly' style, composed of a unique combination of alternating, radiating bands of color, executed in color pencil on paper. When fully unfurled, the accordion format of the publication allows for all 55 drawings to be seen simultaneously and in the order in which they were exhibited.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Portrait-making receives a revisionist survey uniting artists of all ages, identities and nationalitiesSpanning from the early 19th century to the present day, this prodigious survey brings together over 50 artists from around the world and argues that the portrait is an enduringly democratic, humanistic genre. Moving beyond binary thinking, the exhibition emphasizes the diversity of subjects and complexities of character that artists have captured through various modes of portrait-making. Looking backward and forward, Pictures Girls Make recontextualizes pioneering portraitists who escaped the narrow first draft of the past century, while also surveying a wide range of contemporary painters. Far from 'just girls,' this range of artists has pushed the genre to capture the actual conditions, social structures and day-to-day experiences that form human existence.Artists include: Gertrude Abercrombie, Maria Anto, Ernie Barnes, Jerome Caja, Xinyi Cheng, Leonor Fini, Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita, Juanita Guccione, Mela Muter, Simphiwe Ndzube, Alice Neel, Collin Sekajugo, Sylvia Sleigh, Aleksandra Waliszewska, Robin F.
