It was a sort of careers guide of its time in which the bright young working-class boy would find articles surveying thirty-four skilled trades. Each article gives, in more or less detail, a description of the kind of work involved, with a wood-engraving. There is a section on the printing trade comprising the six articles which are reprinted here. The trade described in Artificiana was, in some aspects, about to become out of date - making paper by hand and printing with a wooden press were already on the way out, to be replaced by continuous production and cast-iron (and, for newspapers, steam-driven) presses; the first type-casting machine was invented in 1838, and guillotines for cutting paper in 1857.
