The theory of dendroidal sets is based on trees instead of linear orders and has many features analogous to the theory of simplicial sets, but it also reveals new phenomena. For example, dendroidal sets admit a closed symmetric monoidal structure related to the Boardman-Vogt tensor product of operads. The lecture notes start with the combinatorics of trees and culminate with a suitable model structure on the category of dendroidal sets. Important concepts are illustrated with pictures and examples.The lecture series by Toën presents derived algebraic geometry. While classical algebraic geometry studies functors from the category of commutative rings to the category of sets, derived algebraic geometry is concerned with functors from simplicial commutative rings (to allow derived tensor products) to simplicial sets (to allow derived quotients). The central objects are derived (higher) stacks, which are functors satisfying a certain up-to-homotopy descent condition. These lectures provide a concise and focused introduction to this vast subject, glossing over many of the technicalities that make the subject's research literature so overwhelming.Both sets of lectures assume a working knowledge of model categories in the sense of Quillen. The course took place at the Centre de Recerca Mathematica (CRM) in Bellaterra from May 27 to June 2, 1998 and was part…of an emphasis semester on Algebraic Topology. It consisted of two parallel series of 6 lectures of 90 minutes each and was intended as an introduction to new homotopy theoretic methods in group cohomology. The first part of the book is concerned with methods of decomposing the classifying space of a finite group into pieces made of classifying spaces of appropriate subgroups. Such decompositions have been used with great success in the last 10-15 years in the homotopy theory of classifying spaces of compact Lie groups and p-compact groups in the sense of Dwyer and Wilkerson. For simplicity the emphasis here is on finite groups and on homological properties of various decompositions known as centralizer resp. normalizer resp. subgroup decomposition. A unified treatment of the various decompositions is given and the relations between them are explored. This is preceeded by a detailed discussion of basic notions such as classifying spaces, simplicial complexes and homotopy colimits.

The fiction label ought to be a giveaway, but some SF writers - especially those with a background in pro…fessional science - are so adept at 'technobabble' that it can be difficult to work out what is fake and what is real. To confuse matters further, Isaac Asimov's 1948 piece about the fictitious time-travelling substance thiotimoline was written, not as a short story, but in the form of a spoof research paper. The boundaries between fact and fiction can also be blurred by physicists themselves - sometimes unintentionally, sometimes with tongue-in-cheek, sometimes to satirize perceived weaknesses in research practices. Examples range from hoaxes aimed at exposing poor editorial standards in academic publications, through 'thought experiments' that sound like the plot of a sci-fi movie to April Fools' jokes. Even the latter may carry a serious message, whether about the sociology of science or poking fun at legitimate but far-out scientific hypotheses. This entertaining book is a joyous romp exploring the whole spectrum of fake physics - from science to fiction and back again.
