Carrilho et al. present the first results of GEOALGAR, a project initiated in 2000 to monitor the seismic activity in the Algarve region (southern Portugal). In this paper results of the relocation of epicenters and determination of fault plane solutions are presented. The new epicentral locations show a more organized spatial distribution which could indicate a possible correlation with some known tectonic features. Fault plane solutions are predominantly of strike-slip motion consistent with a horizontal compression in the NW-SE to NNW-SSE direction. The paper by Yelles-Chaouche et al. presents a detailed study of the 22 December, 1999 earthquake at Ain Temouchent (northwest Algeria) of magnitude 5. 7. The earthquake caused serious damage in the town of Ain Teemouchent with 25 casualties and 25000 people left homeless. Intensity map, surface features and the focal mechanism, based on wave form analysis, are shown. The mechanism corresponds to reverse fault motion with planes striking NNE-SSW resulting from horizontal compression in the NW-SE direction. This corresponds to the general mechanism found for Algeria earthquakes. Buforn et al. present a study of the characteristics of the plate boundary between Africa and Iberia, from west of Cape San Vicente to Algeria, using seismicity and source mechanism data. Neuware -This volume has grown from a conference entitled Harmonic Maps, Minimal Sur faces and Geometric Flows which was held at the Universite de Bretagne Occi dentale from July 7th-12th, 2002, in the town of Brest in Brittany, France. We welcomed many distinguished mathematicians from around the world and a dy namic meeting took place, with many fruitful exchanges of ideas. In order to produce a work that would have lasting value to the mathematical community, the organisers decided to invite a small number of participants to write in-depth articles around a common theme. These articles provide a balance between introductory surveys and ones that present the newest results that lie at the frontiers of research. We thank these mathematicians, all experts in their field, for their contributions. Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -The drugs named calcium channel blockers (CCBs) were initially termed cal cium antagonists (see Chapter 1). They are also designated as calcium entry blockers (CEBs), calcium blockers, calcium channel antagonists, calcium channel inhibitors (and in French anticalciques). As this is reported in several chapters of this book, their main effect is a blockade of calcium entry into cells through voltage operated calcium channels (VOCCs). Chemically related drugs, such as Bay K 8644, exert the opposite effect by increasing the proba bility of calcium channel opening. One of the subcommittees of the Nomenclature Committee (NC-IUPAR) of the International Union of Pharmacology has been devoted to the classification of calcium channels and the site of action of drugs modifying channel function. The members of this Committee are noted for their significant contribution to the field (Tab. 1). A report has been published in 1992 in Pharmacological Reviews [3]. A list of criteria was approved for the identification of distinct drug binding 2 sites on Ca + channels. It included: (a) the demonstration of a stereoselective binding site supported by drug interaction studies (competition with other drugs, non-competitive interactions with other sites, reversal of inhibitory effects by channel activators); (b) demonstration of the electrophysiologieal effects of the drug and selectivity of action compared to other sites; (c) deter mination of the affinity for the type and subtype of ion channel.
