Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.Medical theory and practice of the 1700s developed rapidly, as is evidenced by the extensive collection, which includes descriptions of diseases, their conditions, and treatments. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Of Seas and Ships and Scientists' is an exciting account of a formative phase of UK science - the foundation and early years of the National Institute of Oceanography. The roots of the NIO may be found in the pre-war research by scientists, on Scott's Discovery, on the biology of the vast Southern Ocean, funded by a tax on whale oil. These pioneers were joined by a small group of young scientists who were brought together under the inspirational leadership of Dr (later Sir) George Deacon, to learn about how to predict waves for amphibious landings. Shortly after the end of the war, these groups coalesced to form the core of the UK's first National Institute of Oceanography. Discoveries made at NIO over the course of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s underpin our modern-day scientific knowledge of the oceans and the seafloor. Written by NIO scientists, the chapters within convey the challenges and excitement of ocean research in a bygone age before micro-electronics, small computers and satellite navigation. The book is a useful introduction for students of marine and environmental science. It will appeal to many scientists, to the general public, to those interested in science and innovation during and after WWII and of course to many living in Surrey who always wondered what went on in the leafy lanes that were home to NIO and its successors for almost 50 years. The Editors: Sir Anthony Laughton joined the NIO in 1955, following a PhD in marine geophysics at Cambridge and was Director of IOS (the successor of NIO) between 1978-88. He has obtained numerous awards and was awarded a knighthood for services to oceanography in 1987. Dr John Gould joined NIO in 1967 and was head of Marine Physics and later directed two global climate projects. Amongst his recent publications is Ocean Circulation and Climate (2001). Mr M.J. 'Tom' Tucker joined the Group W at the Admiralty Research Laboratory in 1944. He later moved to NIO. Amongst his recent publications is Waves in Ocean Engineering (2001), authored with E.G. Pitt. Prof. Howard Roe joined the Whale Research Unit at NIO in 1965, following a degree in Zoology at University College London. He was the Director of the Southampton Oceanography Centre from 1999 to his retirement in 2005. 'The NIO history is a proud chapter in the life of all oceanographers. This is a story that had to be told and what a good job the editors and authors have done in telling it.' - Walter Munk, Secretary of the Navy Chair in Oceanography, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla, California.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This report is the IPEM publication on the use of the DICOM standard in Image and Data Management across the areas of Nuclear Medicine, Physiological Measurement, Radiotherapy and Ultrasound. Starting with a general overview of DICOM the report seeks to indicate some of the problems of working with PACS and the DICOM standard, with particular attention being given to areas outwith Diagnostic Radiology. There follows separate chapters on Nuclear Medicine and Positron Emission Tomography, Physiological Measurement, Radiotherapy, and Ultrasound. The final chapter discusses some technical aspects of PACS, while appendices provide a set of proposals concerning the development of the use of PACS in Radiotherapy, a list of the parts of the DICOM standard and a glossary of acronyms commonly found in the PACS/DICOM literature. This publication is aimed at Clinical Scientists and Engineers who are required to commission or integrate DICOM Medical Devices but is likely to be of interest to anybody involved in the pursuit of DICOM integration.
