Ill 1,20; cf. Cic. De Or. I 6,23). Quintilian's discussion of the latter, the primordia dicendi (I 9), engages the tradition, if not the text-books, of the progymnasmata. At the same time, here and in related discussions in II 4 and VIII 5 Quintilian proves himself a critical heir of tradition, whether progym-nasmatic or Aristotelean. Quintilian is not, however, the only concrete link between philosophical Rhetoric and pre-rhetorical school-work.
