A history of the New York, Ontario, and Western Railroad which, though parts of it dipped into new Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania, primarily served New York State in the area between the lines of the Erie and the New York Central. It was conceived to serve the rural population and provide a readier route to market their produce to the large easten centers (though some irate farmers were known to plow under its roadbed as fast as it was graded if it interfered with cattle fencing). The O & W was founded in 1868 (as the New York and Oswego Midland) and ran until 1957.
