Top edges unopened. Publisher's announcement for Ovyde, Methamorphose by Shakespeare Head, laid in. Leading corners bumped & rubbed; a few marks of soil to covers; perliminary leaf with offset tanning from announcement with faint foxing, Achilles Tatius was a Greek from Alexandria in Egypt; he is now believed to have flourished in the second century CE. Of his life nothing is known, though the Suidas says he became a Christian and a bishop and wrote a work on etymology, one on the sphere, and an account of great men. He is famous however for his surviving novel in eight books, The Adventures of Leucippe and Clitophon, one of the best Greek love stories. Clitophon relates to a friend the various difficulties which he and Leucippe had to overcome before they are happily united. The story is full of incident and readers are kept in suspense. There are many digressions giving scientific facts, myths, and meditations.

Four volumes, limited to 780 copies, 8vo. Hinges of volume I slightly cracked but sound, the prospectus for the Shakespeare Head Press editions of both Smollett and Henry Fielding loosely inserted. Original gilt titled green buckram, t.e.g., spines slightly browned.

His first play, Friends, was performed in Dublin in 1917. With a neat dedication on ffep.

Internally crisp and clean, but for a tiny black ink ownership to the front pastedown, dated 1937. Spine toned, with some peeling to label, and moderate general wear and bumping to boards. Minor worming to joints / hinges. Very good. Ovid's classic history of Gods and Men, here translated by William Caxon in 1480. Sadly only these six books of the original manuscript survived, collected by Samuel Pepys and bound in his personal brown sheepskin.

The Shakespeare Head Press limited edition of the novels of Henry Fielding, limited to one thousand and thirty copies. Octavo, ten volumes bound in full red morocco with gilt titles to the spine in six compartments within raised bands, gilt decorated inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. In fine condition. Henry Fielding wrote several influential novels that played a key role in shaping the development of English literature. He began his career as a novelist with Shamela (1741), a satirical response to Samuel Richardsonâs Pamela, in which he mocked the original's moral pretensions. The following year, he published Joseph Andrews (1742), which expanded on the satire while introducing more original characters and a lively comic style. In 1743, he released Jonathan Wild, a darkly humorous tale critiquing political and criminal corruption. His most famous work, Tom Jones (1749), combined robust storytelling, intricate plotting, and social commentary, and was celebrated for its innovation in narrative form. Fielding continued his literary career with A Journey from This World to the Next (1749), a philosophical allegory, and Amelia (1751), a more sentimental and morally serious novel that explored marriage and virtue.

In fine condition. An exceptional example. Daniel Defoe was a prolific writer whose works spanned fiction, journalism, political pamphlets, and economic treatises. He is best known for his novel Robinson Crusoe (1719), a foundational text in the development of the English novel, which combined adventure, survival, and moral reflection. Defoe followed it with other notable fictions such as Moll Flanders, A Journal of the Plague Year, Colonel Jack, and Roxana, all of which explored themes of crime, repentance, social mobility, and the human condition. Beyond fiction, he wrote influential pamphlets like The Shortest Way with the Dissenters (1702), a biting satire on religious intolerance, and economic works such as A Plan of the English Commerce (1728), where he advocated for commercial expansion and economic policy reform.
