At that time, the new form of domesticity proved to be a powerful weapon. Skillfully crafted images of domestic bliss were launched worldwide as part of a carefully orchestrated propaganda campaign. Buildings became images, and images, in turn, became buildings themselves, occupied like any other architectural space. The importance of architects like Charles and Ray Eames lies in their particular sensitivity to this transformation. Domesticity under siege is the hallmark of the postwar years and also the central theme of this archaeological study. Colomina's book explores this unique phenomenon from diverse angles to construct a multifaceted image of the times, a portrait of that state of mind that continues to haunt us.
