Bound in unsigned crushed red morocco, lightly mottled in a Spanish style, covers gilt with a fillet and foliate frame with red and blue morocco onlays, spines gilt in panels with blue morocco onlays, gilt dentelles, burgundy moiré silk linings, and top edges gilt. Spines very slightly faded. Volume one with rear board with half a dozen small scrapes, light cracking to front hinge, light chipping beginning to head of spine. Lower edge of fore edge of text blocks with some black smudging. All volumes with slight bumping to corners and very light wear. Limitation pages printed in red and black, #34/150, signed by the publisher with no dedicatee listed. Frontispiece portrait of Riley signed by him in pencil. Illustrated with numerous facsimiles and illustrations, including original watercolors by Glenn Henshaw, J. Alfred Seaford, H. Rex Cotton, and Mary McAuley. Presentation copy, 12mo. (140x95mm), pp: vi+[1]-136, to the head of title page inscribed in ink 'Sara Coleridge, Greta Hall/ Keswick/ to/ Derwent Moultrie Coleridge.' The 1st edition was printed for Harvey and Darton, London, 1821 with 'a tale' added after 'Cousins' in the title with 121pp, 4 plates & illustrations. Our copy is the 2nd edition published without plates & illustrations & 136pp rather than 121pp. Only copies of the 2nd edn. in Liverpool & Newcastle located in the UK on Worldcat, confirmed by JISC. With the contemporary bookplate of 'Anna Hills' pasted to front pastedown endpaper, contents lightly foxed and spotted especially final leaf. Bound in half mottled calf, marbled boards, spine gilt ruled with floral motifs in compartments, red leather title label, wear to head of spine and light wear, otherwise an attractive copy in sound and tight condition, very good condition. Greta Hall is a house in Keswick famous as the residence of both Coleridge and Southey. Sara left Greta Hall, Keswick, in 1829-30 having married her cousin and the presentation to Derwent (her nephew 1828-1880) is obviously of this date and may well have been given at his birth in October 1828. Sara Coleridge (December 1802 - May 1852) was an English author and translator. She was the third and only daughter of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. She was born at Greta Hall, Keswick. Here after 1803 the families of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Robert Southey and Mrs. Lovell all lived together. The Wordsworths at Grasmere were their neighbours. Wordsworth, in his poem "The Triad" has left us a description, or poetical glorification, as Sara Coleridge calls it, of the three girls; his own daughter Dora, Edith Southey and Sara Coleridge, the last of the three, though eldest born. In September 1829, at Crosthwaite Parish Church, Keswick, after an engagement of seven years duration, Sara Coleridge was married to her cousin, Henry Nelson Coleridge, younger son of Captain James Coleridge. In 1837 the Coleridges moved to Chester Place, Regent's Park and in the same year appeared 'Phantasmion, a Fairy Tale', Sara Coleridge's longest original work, described by critic Mike Ashley as "the first fairytale novel written in English". The literary historian Dennis Butts describes 'Phantasmion' as "a remarkable pioneering fantasy" and "an extraordinary monument to her talent".…

A good copy, the blue watered silk covers are faded around the the edges on four volumes and on the remaining volume (4th vol.) the whole front cover is faded, the vellum is a bit soiled on all volumes, and there is a bookplate on the paste-down endpaper of each volume. The top edges are gilt. The frontispiece and the nine original etchings are clean and nearly all other text pages are clean. On the title page this is called the Mary Rose Randall edition. There were probably 26 six copies which contained eleven hand-lettered or illuminated initials. This is NOT one of those copies. The space is present for the initial, but it is blank.
