First edition, first printing, scarce in commerce, of this collection of writings on ancient Chinese history and philosophy by 23 female members of Shanghai's inter-war expatriate community. By 1920, membership of the American Women's club had grown to 300, with many also belonging to the Daughters of the American Revolution. The club was founded in the early 20th century as an affiliate of the General Federation of Women's Clubs. Its Literary Department provided a space for intellectual enquiry into Chinese history, art, and culture. This was the second volume published by the club, following the release of Arts and Art Crafts of China in 1921. Octavo. With photographic half-tone, decorative tailpieces in text. Original black-lettered grey wrappers, tied with black cord into blue quarter cloth boards through punch holes as issued, grey sides, front board lettered in black. This potpourri of papers, all read before the Literary Department of the American Women's Club between 1923 and 1925, concerns literary and historical topics as varied as Song dynasty painting, the fall of the Ming dynasty, and Chinese nestorianism.
