Coming down from writing his controversial END OF INTELLIGENT WRITING, Kostelanetz remarks in the introduction to FIFTH ASSEMBLING that "whole classes of literature were excluded from the dominant channels of cultural communication" because "the literary-industrial complex" was "subservient to the demands of fashion and commerce." In this work we see the material he would prefer to see in print, assembled by taking submissions from artists willing to send in 1000 copies of their pieces. 11'' x 8.5''. Original staple-bound photographic wrappers. Illustrated variously throughout. [142] leaves. Original $3.95 price on cover crossed out, repriced "4.95" in ink. Lightly scuffed with mild soiling and small tears around spine ends. Else sound and bright.

Includes an introduction to the process, as well as a 10-point preface by Richard Kostelanetz. Each contributor prints 1,000 copies of their piece at their own expense and the issue is bound using those contributions. According to the introduction, no piece is refused. (N.B. In this case, "unpublishable" means "eccentric" and not "NSFW.") An interesting publication.

As long as it could fit into the 8-1/2 X 11 inch format, no restrictions were imposed and no contributions were refused. Contributors to this volume include Russell Edson, Raymond Federman, Jochen Gerz, Roni Hoffman, Richard Meltzer, Bern Porter, Ruth Krauss, and many others, including of course the editors themselves. Spine and rear panel toned, otherwise fine.

Moderate wear to wrappers, a few items slightly too large for the binding with subsequent creasing, else a Very Good and sound example. An assemblage of mimeographed broadsides, silkscreened newspapers, and xeroxed printouts assembled by the editors solicited from contributors who were "invited to submit 1000 copies of up to four 8 1/2" x 11" pages of anything they wanted to include--printed at their own expense." A marvelous, imaginative, and pleasingly thick communal zine. Contributors included John Baldessari, Douglas Blazek, Bern Porter, Rosemarie Waldrop, Davi Det Hompson, and John Furnival among many others.

The first two issues of Assembling, a legendary avant-garde magazine of "the unpublished and the unpublishable", each one of only 1,000 copies. Contributors were invited to submit up to four pages of whatever they wanted to include in an attempt to give a truly open forum to avant-garde writing. These two issues include work by, among many others, Vito Acconci, Hannah Weiner, Dan Graham, Tom Ahern, Arakawa, Lee Baxandall, Regina Cohen, and Richard Meltzer. They were asked to submit 1,000 copies of any work. Submissions included original writing, word art, illustrations, folded and stapled clippings, a few original pen and paint contributions and, most notably, Edward Ruscha's smudge of chocolate in Second Assembling, a gesture to his 1970 contribution to the Venice Biennale, "Chocolate Room". Thirteen issues of Assembling were published between 1970 and 1982. 2 vols, quarto. Original white wrappers printed in black and blue, Assembling wire-stitched as issued. Loosely inserted into Assembling is single-sheet typed letter inviting the recipient, Tjeerd Deelstra, to contribute to Seventh Assembling. Edges a little creased and rubbed, wrappers of Assembling slightly toned with a few faint marks, Second Assembling bumped at spine ends; letter creased where folded thrice, trivial chips and toning: in very good condition.
