A world survey of dangerous snakes (by Mr. R.K. Golikere). Index. "There is so far no modern standard book on Indian snakes or a scientific and technical one. From my experience there appears to be a demand for some popular book giving general information and useful knowledge about the various common snakes of India. I have been interested in the subject for over 25 years, being drawn to it mainly by the heavy mortality figures. There is hardly anything original in this book. The information has been collected from divers sources and put together without its being made too technical. A little information is added about some of the principal snakes of other countries, whose names one often comes across in the course of general reading. Burma and the Andamans, being at present under Indian jurisdiction, have been treated as a part of India for the purposes of this book. Some of the illustrations given are not very dear, as they represent specimens of snakes preserved in spirit." (jacket).

The effects of plants on milk. 9. Classification of poisons. Bibliography. Index. The preparation of this handbook was undertaken because of the great lack of readily available and reliable information on the subject in English scientific literature. Many of the facts were known to a few interested persons but many others were so scattered here and there in technical reports and journals that they were scarcely known even to expert chemists and botanists. The bringing of this information together in some sort of order has involved considerable labour extending over several years but if the volume be found helpful to those for whose use it has been prepared I shall feel more than gratified. That the subject is of importance is fully realised by farmers and veterinary surgeons alike for the annual loss of stock due to poisonous plants though not ascertainable is undoubtedly considerable. It was felt that notes on mechanical injury caused by plants and on the influence of plants and on milk might usefully be included as in some degree related to poisoning this has the reform been done. One the other hand a number of cultivated plants (e.g. Rhus Wistaria) which are poisonous have not been included because exotic and hardly likely to be eaten by stock. Fungi generally also find no place in the volume as they are sufficiently extensive to deserve a volume to themselves and are far less readily identified than flowering plants. The dividing line between plants which are actually poisonous and those which are only suspected is far from clear but a division was considered desirable for the convenience of the reader and an endeavour has been made to give a sound but brief statement as to the present information on plants poisonous to live stock with symptoms toxic principles and a list of the more important references to the bibliography in relation to each plant included. 120 pp.

Amphibians and fishes differs every little from the ninth edition. Its arrangement is determined by that of the cases and specimen's and it sometimes refers to trivial details which are of interest solely to visitors actually in the galleries. As fossils can only be understand by those who have some acquaintance with the existing world of life. This book assumes on the part of the reader at least as much elementary knowledge as is contained in the guides to the Department of Zoology. At this early period in the study of philosophy however it was a common belief that animals could originate from the mud or slime of lakes and rivers the true nature of fossil was settled by the beginning of the eighteenth century and the next problem was to explain how the remains of sea animals had been buried in the rocks for inland and at great heights among hills and mountains. It was demonstrated that during past ages the distribution of land and sea mountains and blains had frequently changed that in fact rain rivers waves currents volcanoes and phenomena like earthquakes were continually altering the earth's surfaces even under the eyes of man himself. The fossils were proved in most cases to be buried in displaced portions of sea bottom and in the mud of dried up lakes. This book can be helpful to those who wants to know about fossils reptiles amphibians and fishes. 112 pp.

From the Foreword This publication is divided into three parts. The lessons in part one should aid in developing an appreciation of the importance of our forest. Part II consists of several lessons describing how farm forestry may be a definite part of the students supervised farming program. Part III includes the forestry jobs the student may complete on his home farm. Much of the factual information in this publication is usable with out of school groups. Considerable data and information are included in the appendix. This should be studied and referred to when related lessons are discussed. Each agriculture teacher in the state is expected to teach farm forestry. The amount of time allotted to this subject should be based on the importance of forests in local county or area. It is believed that more teachers should develop school forests which have proved to be effective aids in teaching this subject. 111 pp.

Hardbound. Zustand: As New. New. Author has found that all hens were no alike that some would be very good table fowl and poor layers. Others would be very good layers and poor table fowl while still other hens would be very fair table fowl and very fair layers. At this time we had all the old fashioned breeds we could get and discarded them all for the single comb white and brown leghorns. The author had decided that knowledge was of commercial value only when applied and having a working knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the hen he decided to try to turn the same to a commercial account and in a couple of years has evolved what is now known as the Walter Hogan System which consists of ascertaining the value of a hen for the purpose you desire by the relative thickness of and distance apart of the pelvic bones. 138 pp.

A scientific study of crop production makes clear the necessity of feeding the crops on the farm and the market conditions have afforded encouragement to the breeders and feeders of good stock. In crop growing and in stock feeding much practical aid has been furnished by the scientists notably by the chemists. The breeders naturally look to the biologists for assistance but up to the present any directions they may have received have been quite definite and not always practical ones. The main object of this book is to direct attention away from profitless speculations that have necessarily characterized some earlier books and to stimulate interest in the more tangible the physical basis of heredity. A scientific study of the physical aspects of heredity leads to conclusions that fully accord with the teachings of the work of our master breeders. It has been the aim to limit discussion to points upon which scientific opinion is quite well agreed though this has not been altogether possible. Free consultation of the references cited will give a deeper acquaintance with scientific aspects of the question. 194 pp.

Hardbound. Zustand: As New. New. This work may be regarded as deceptive index to the flora and a handbook to the drugs and economic products in use by native practitioners and others in the province and neighbouring countries. It may be mentioned that the idea did not originate wholly with the author but besides the want experienced by him of a guide to the known flora when making a collection of drugs for the Kurrachee Museum there was a general conviction among those interested in economic botany that some work comprehending the subject within a moderate compass was a desideratum first as supplying descriptions of known plants for the enquirer and secondly facilitating by such descriptions the work of those interested in medical and economic botany as it was dearly evident there were numerous vegetable products in common use in the province the sources of which were either uncertain or unknown for want of a scientific guide. 220 pp.

Mr. Norman was until his death in 1944 Assistant Keeper of the Department of Zoology of the British Museum and was in charge of the fish collections in the National History Galleries. Since the publication of Gunther's Introduction to the study of Fishes in 1880 no satisfactory work has appeared in this country dealing with fish alone which is intelligible to those who are without the zoological training necessary for the understanding of the more technical books on the subject. In the present work every side of fish life is dealt with special stress being laid throughout on the evolutionary aspect and the importance of the environment in molding the bodies of fishes. Chapters are devoted to form locomotion respiration fins scales breeding parental care development distribution fossils food and so on. Nor has the relation of fishes to the life of mankind been neglected and chapters dealing with fisheries fishing methods fishery research and even fish mythology are included. Finally an extensive index should make the book valuable for purposes of reference. 464 pp.

This book is intended to give brief and practical suggestions on the growing breeding and marketing of potatoes. It is written especially for the practical farmer and the student who may wish concise information on the potato without having to read many miscellaneous sources of information especially experiment station bulletins which although highly valuable are likely to contain much detail. The chapters on breeding and varieties occupy an unusually large proportion of the book. This is for the reason that these subjects have been treated in potato literature much less than methods of culture and the general interest in them has called for this extended discussion to meet not only the necessities of the case but also the public demand. 319 pp.

From the preface In this book an attempt has been made to present methods which are of use to phytopathologists. Many of the methods are useful in other botanical sciences also. Before preparing the manuscript considerable work was done to develop new experimental methods and to improve technics described by other workers. The methods described are those which were found to be most satisfactory. An extensive bibliography has been included. Many of the papers cited describe technics which have not been used by phytopathologists but which appear to be applicable in pathological work. 156 pp.

The following is an attempt to summarise the fundamental facts of the formation of soils to consider the close connection between climate and soils in greater detail to indicate how soils are related to one another and so lead up to a classification of soils types a system of soils which on a true scientific basis. All types of soils may be arranged in these three groups Climate Soils Zones and Regions. The soils have peculiarities in common which display by the climate. Local Soils. Within the climatic soil zones the local soils form sub division which display varying properties determined by special influences (parent rock water conductivity texture situation etc.) Soils influenced by organisms. The first two groups are alone suitable for the preparation of soil maps since these are lasting influences to which the soil is subjected. Whereas other branches of scientific investigation have been independent for a long time soil science has still to fight for recognition. Its heaviest burden is its present dependence on agricultural chemistry which primarily an applied sciences has to subserve practical purposes. 128 pp.

From the Preface Prepared as an interpretive source of information for students farmers researchers and other in the horticultural fields this book is concerned (both experienced and beginning) about all the information he is likely to need on mushrooms their botanical position mode of growth structure physiology habitat and ecology economic importance both as food and as pest preparation of edible forms (with recipes) varieties of poisonous mushrooms and the poisons involved cultivation of edible mushrooms the higher fungi systematically considered and many special topics like fairy rings and luminosity. The key features of this book lies in its detailed impeccably accurate descriptions of important mushrooms. After a 20 page finding key (down to genera) follow full descriptions of more than 225 species (down to subspecies races and varieties in some cases) covering physical appearance habitat and growing conditions seasons poisonous or edible status and whatever else is necessary. These descriptions are particularly helpful in indicating individual variations in color shape and size that might mislead a beginner and in offering hints on distinguishing between mushrooms that might be confused. More than 300 other mushrooms are fully covered by cross reference. Much of this information is not generally available in other non technical studies. Despite the scholarly stature of this book and the breadth of its coverage it is not technical and it can be used immediately by readers without previous knowledge of botany. This single volume the reader can have unlimited safe pleasure in gathering and identifying mushrooms. 560 pp.

References. Index. The large demand for vegetable growing since the publication of the first edition provided strong evidence that the book met a definite and widespread need. Much new material the result of research and practical experience has become available and has now been included by subjecting the entire text to a thorough revision. The plan has again been followed of placing emphasis on research studies that have made contributions to vegetable growing practices. Soils fertilizers irrigation pest and weed control and similar subjects are discussed at those places in the text where they have direct application to the treatment of the specific vegetable crop. Chapter 15 formerly entitled insect and disease control is now Herbicides insecticides and Fungicides otherwise the chapter headings remain the same as in the first edition. The original chapter on seed production which was said by a colleague to be one of the subjects that everybody else has sidestepped up to now brought forth much favorable comment. Good seed is of course very important and plays a major role in the quality and yield of the growth harvested. The classifications and discussions of varieties and hybrids now include new introductions and have been enlarged in significant ways. New features in this edition include discussions of the following improved cultural practices in general for both mineral soils and peat (muck) soils the theory using onion and carrot as examples of why and how different seed production practices may subsequently influence the quality of the vegetable crop the increasing importance of hybrids pelleted (coated) seed up to date weed disease and insect control measures heat units for processing crops storage (both common and cold) sprout in hibitors irrigation waxing producing onion tomato and cabbage transplants and marketing methods and containers. 516 pp.

Index. Agriculture is and for many years to come must remain India's greater industry and the foundation of the state. In comparison with the value of the annual produce of the soil and the trade in raw materials the remaining industries of the country are with few exception relatively unimportant. Many improvements in crop production have been devised which are well within the means of the people. To utilize these discoveries an organisation working in the districts has been evolved by which the lessons learnt at the experiment stations have been brought rapidly and successfully to the fields of the cultivators. Besides the results obtained on crops and the work done in the distribution of seed the investigation in progress have brought to light a number of problems the successful solution of which must be accomplished before further advances can be made. 200 pp.

From the Preface In presenting this work (World Medicinal Plants for Health and Healing) to the public the author does so with the greatest confidence feeling assured that his readers will appreciate his endeavours to alleviate the sum of human misery. Many works have been written on medical science by men of scholastic education but these works are either too expensive or written in language which the bulk of the people do not understand and the remedies are of such a nature that is like putting a sword into the hand of a child. In this work technicalities have been avoided as far as practicable and it is written in so plain a manner that all who run may read. Not only is this a Guide of information for the curing of all the curable diseases incidental to a man but it lays down the plan of prevention which is far better than cure. Nothing is recommended on theory but all from practical experience. The use of poisons is avoided whether as remedial agents or as stimulants. The use of the lancet is held to be quite unnecessary and the use of that formidable enemy the sheet anchor the Goliath of medicine that all potent remedial agent of the medical profession mercury is altogether repudiated by the author. The means recommended are sanitary assisting nature to overcome disease by giving those remedies which act in harmony with the eternal laws of nature these remedies are from the vegetable world and when taken properly will arouse the dormant energies of the body to fulfill their proper functions and make life's wheel run smoothly. 164 pp.

The birds dealt with are the ones commonly seen In Summer at such places. As nine out of ten species of hill birds move to lower levels in winter the bird population of a hill station in winter differs from that in summer. The scope of this book included birds seen in winter at the various hill stations and those found in summer only at lower elevations than 5000 feet above the sea level or higher altitudes than 7500 its bulk would have been considerably increased. 200 pp.

It consists of minute study on external features, sexual, dimorphism; and anatomy, histology and physiology of all the systems of a snake. As the death rate is very high by the bite of the poisonous snakes. Keeping this idea the author has included a separate chapter on deadly venomous snakes of India in which he has described identification of poisonous snakes, biting mechanism, identification of snake bite and treatment. Hence this publication will help to the common peoples. This publication contains diagrams with simple abbreviations, microscopic photographs wherever necessary and references for the purpose of future researchers. The Common Indian Rat Snake, Pyas Mucosus (Linn.) is one of the commonest snake both in the hills and the plains and is widely distributed throughout the whole of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Indo-China. It has been recorded in the hills upto an elevation of 7000 feet, but it is mainly an inhabitant of the plains, frequenting the open country, often, in the vicinity of human habitations." (jacket).

In an industry which has grown so rapidly and is unique in that a long time must elapse before the efficiency of many of its processes are known it is but natural that many perplexing problems should arise. The wood preservation industry certainly has its just share of them and although splendid progress has been made much yet remains to be learned in fact accurate knowledge is just in its infancy. The whole art is permeated with contradictory evidence and opinions so that it is exceedingly difficult for the layman seeking advice to become other than confused. In the following pages taken largely from lecture notes prepared by the author for the civil engineering students at the University of Wisconsin it has been the aim to present reliable information of fundamental importance. This book will be found of value and use to engineers foresters lumbermen students and all those interested in this subject and that this effort may assist in raising still higher the enviable position already held by the wood preserving industry. 312 pp.
