Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The collections of twentieth-century paintings in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, have developed largely through the generosity of individuals. Notable among these in the early decades of the century were Frank Hindley Smith and Mrs W F R Weldon, while since the Second World War the Museum's collections have been enriched through gifts and requests from Thomas Balston, R A P Bevan, Molly Freeman, Christopher Hewett and others. This book gives the reader a taste of the wide range of the collection, with its representative group of Camden Town and Euston Road School pictures, and important early works by Bonnard, Picasso and Matisse. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The collection of paintings, drawings, watercolours and etchings by Samuel Palmer in the Ashmolean Museum is the most important in the world. It is especially rich in the early works of the Shoreham period, from c. 1824 to 1834, notably the haunting self portrait and the unique group of six sepia drawings of 1825, which represent the 'visionary landscape' at its most intense. This handbook reproduces in colour all but a few of the works by Palmer in the Ashmolean. The book is designed to provide a stimulating introduction for the general reader and a useful and reliable guide for the expert. Colin Harrison is an Assistant Keeper in the Department of Western Art in the Ashmolean Museum. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. In October 2015, metal detectorist James Mather discovered an important Viking hoard near Watlington in South Oxfordshire. The hoard dates from the end of the 870s, a key moment in the struggle between Anglo-Saxons and Vikings for control of southern England. The Watlington hoard is a significant new source of information on that struggle, throwing new light not only on the conflict between Anglo-Saxon and Viking, but also on the changing relationship between the two great Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Mercia and Wessex. This was to lead to the formation of a single united kingdom of England only a few years later. The hoard contains a mixture of Anglo-Saxon coins and Viking silver, and is in many ways a typical Viking hoard. However, its significance comes from the fact that it contains so many examples of previously rare coins belonging to Alfred the Great, king of Wessex (871-99) and his less well-known contemporary Ceolwulf II of Mercia (874-c.879). These coins provide a clearer understanding of the relationship between Alfred and Ceolwulf, and perhaps also of how the once great kingdom of Mercia came to be absorbed into the emerging kingdom of England by Alfred and his successors. A major fundraising campaign is being planned by the Ashmolean to secure this collection for the museum. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. As some American artists began to eliminate people and remove extraneous details from their compositions, they often employed neat, orderly brushwork or close-up, unemotional photography. Artists as diverse as Patrick Henry Bruce, John Covert, Georgia O'Keeffe, Paul Strand and Arthur Dove navigated European and American avant-garde circles, picking and choosing new ideas and methods. Inspiration ranged from cubism and machine parts to new technologies, and they found ways to bring order to the modern world through extreme simplification. For them, abstraction involved absence and presence - the evacuation of human beings but also the desire to depict something that would not otherwise be visible or to render visible unseen natural processes like the passage of time, sound waves, or weather patterns. Their artworks provide a new context for the precisionist works in the subsequent sections and point to modern ideas about what art could be. How does a crisp painting technique relate to an aesthetic of absence? The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The Print Room of the Ashmolean Museum is known throughout the world for its Italian and English drawings but it also holds outstanding collections of Netherlandish and French drawings. There are over two thousand drawings by French artists in the Ashmolean. Based on the drawings bequeathed by Francis Douce in 1834, the collection has grown by gifts and purchases to include most of the familiar French draughtsmen from the early 1600s to the end of the nineteenth century. Some artists are represented by dozens of works and there are many rarities. The fifty-two drawings by fifty-one artists in this book have been selected to suggest the quality of the works and to indicate the range and variety of the collection. The choice includes landscapes, figure drawings, portraits and studies for prints and paintings. Most of these are by famous artists - Poussin, Claude, Watteau, Boucher, Fragonard, Ingres, Degas, Manet and Cezanne are all here - but there are a few equally interesting drawings by artists who are less well known. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Thanks to its past benefactors, the University of Oxford's collections in the Bodleian Library and Ashmolean Museum are very rich in Indian paintings, especially of the Mughal period (c.1550-1850), in which court painting was raised to new levels of naturalistic refinement. The Bodleian has the older and larger collection, dating from Archbishop Laud's donation of an album of Mughal paintings in 1640. As well as some outstanding Mughal and Deccani masterpieces of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, the Bodleian has extensive holdings of the later provincial schools of the eighteenth century. The Ashmolean collection, formed since the 1950s, complements the Bodleian's in its representation of the Rajput schools of Rajasthan and the Punjab Hills. This book presents thirty-eight paintings of the Mughal, Deccani and Rajput schools, from the period c.1560-1800. They include portraits of rulers and nobles, scenes of life at court, illustrations to romances and examples of the popular genre of ragamala', the illustration of musical modes. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Hieroglyphic script was used by the inhabitants of Egypt from its introduction in about 3000 BC until its last recorded instance in AD 394. Although hieroglyphs are pictures of people, animals, birds and various objects, they are not mere picture writing. In order to be able to read and understand a text written in Egyptian hieroglyphs, it is necessary to know how each sign was read (pronounced), and to know the language, Egyptian. This publication explains some of the rules of the hieroglyphic script and Egyptian language using illustrated examples from the Ashmolean's Egyptian collection. You can take it to the Museum and read it in front of the monuments described, but it is just as easy to use at home. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Edward Lear, born in 1812, was a British artist, illustrator, author, and poet, renowned today primarily for his literary nonsense, in poetry and prose, and especially his limericks, a form that he popularised. Lear produced the illustrated poetry collection Book of Nonsense (1846) for the Earl of Derby's grandchildren. His other works include Nonsense Songs, Stories, Botany and Alphabets (1871), containing The Owl and the Pussy-Cat, and Laughable Lyrics (1877). This beautiful facsimile features a short introduction about Edward Lear, and how he refused to acknowledge the 'nonsense' work in the earlier years because he wanted to be taken seriously as a landscape artist. Following this is a replica of each page, featuring the letters of the alphabet with the short poem underneath each drawing. This will be accompained by the poem again, this time written in a more accessible font so that children may read this too. The Ashmolean recently acquired an 1860s edition of the Alphabet of Nonsense, and it is this original that they have utilised in order to recreate this stunning classic. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. This book charts the development of Glass over four millennia -- from 18th Dynasty Egypt, through to the present day -- illustrated by 56 examples from the collections held by the Ashmolean Museum. The earliest fragments are from a Meopotamian glass beaker, dating from the 15th/14th century BC and found relatively recently in Iraq; the earliest complete piece is a small, green fish-shaped dish from Ancient Egypt dated 1400/1300 BC. The invention of glass-blowing in the first century BC revolutionised the glass industry -- two early Roman vessels are illustrated -- the later discovery of the moulding process is illustrated by moulded bottles from Northern France. Most of the later examples are English, from early eighteenth-century wine bottles and engraved wine glasses, including examples by William Beilby and an 'Amen' glass c1740/50, ending with the contemporary 'Finzi' bowl engraved by Lawrence and Simon Whistle c.1981 to commemorate the composer Gerald Finzi (1901-56). Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The Jewish Journey is unique in three respects. First, it is a short, accessible, affordable and illustrated history of the Jewish people. Most books of this kind are heavy, unwieldy, expensive coffee-table books. Secondly, the book is absolutely unique in highlighting Jewish objects from the standing collection of a world-renowned public museum. Jewish history is more normally confined to dedicated Jewish museums. This book breaks new ground by showing Jewish history in its wider historical, social and cultural context, and presents objects that reflect on daily life over the centuries, e.g. family, marriage, trade and travel, rather than the much more common depictions of artefacts for sacred and religious use. Thirdly, the Jewish significance of these particular 22 objects has until now been overlooked. This book draws them together for the first time to tell their specifically Jewish story, highlighting both the distinctive features of Jewish experience and the long history of close interaction with other cultures and religions. The 22 objects include pottery, coins, jewellery, household artefacts, sacred items, musical instruments and paintings.Together they bring to life the experiences of the real men and women who owned, made and used them, from kings, courtiers and scholars to guerrilla fighters, musicians and market stall holders. Individually and collectively, the objects vividly document dark periods of persecution and forced migration, whilst highlighting the astonishing resilience and diversity of Jewish life, revealing centuries of two-way interaction with many other cultures and religions. Through the histories of each of the objects, the reader is guided on a double journey. One path leads through the galleries of the Ashmolean; the other accompanies the Jewish people across the centuries. The Jewish Journey brings to light for the first time the amazing Jewish treasures in the Ashmolean Museum, explaining their specifically Jewish significance in a direct, accessible style for the general reader. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The Ashmolean Museum houses one of the most extensive collections of wood engravings in the world. The collection effectively began with the gift in 1964, by Arthur Mitchell, of over 3,000 prints, including a large group of wood engravings. During the 1980s and 1990s, it expanded remarkably with acquisitions of large groups of prints, often as gifts from the artists, resulting in a succession of monographic exhibitions on some of the most important wood engravers. They included John Farleigh (1986), John Buckland Wright (1990), Clare Leighton (1992), Monica Poole (1993) and Anne Desmet (1998). A key point in this period of expansion was the acquisition of a comprehensive body of work by Gertrude Hermes and Blair Hughes-Stanton in 1995 from the artists' family, which resulted in a memorable exhibition organised by Katharine Eustace. More recently, the Ashmolean has formed a close partnership with the Society of Wood Engravers (SWE) and has been keeping the collection up to date by acquiring work by members, both at the Society's annual exhibition and privately. This exhibition catalogue covers the entire history of wood engraving, including every major artist of the genre. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
