Text Deutsch und Englisch. - Aus dem Vorwort: Johann Christian Reinhart (1761 Hof - Rom 1847) gehört zu den wichtigsten deutschen Künstlern der Zeit um 1800. Er wurde in Rom, wo er seit 1789 lebte, zusammen mit seinem Freund Joseph Anton Koch zum maßgeblichen klassizistischen Landschaftskünstler. Gleichzeitig beherrschte er aber seit seiner Studienzeit in Leipzig und Dresden die Prinzipien der topographisch genauen Landschaftswiedergabe. Sein Schaffen pendelt somit zwischen Naturansichten und Ideallandschaften. Die Zeitgenossen schätzten beide Arten der Landschaftskunst Reinharts, so daß er sich innerhalb der internationalen Künstlerkolonie der Ewigen Stadt zu einer geachteten Instanz entwickelte. Reisende machten ihm ihre Aufwartung, Malerkollegen suchten seinen Rat, und er erhielt zahlreiche Ehrungen. In Anbetracht seines langen Lebens ist sein ¼uvre überschaubar. Mitunter wurde dies damit begründet, daß er es bevorzugt habe, die römische Campagna jagend zu durchstreifen, statt kontinuierlich in seinem Atelier zu arbeiten. Diese Anekdote erklärt aber - wenn überhaupt - nur die geringere Produktion in seinen späteren Lebensjahren. Davon abgesehen ist anzunehmen, daß viele seiner Arbeiten, insbesondere Zeichnungen, nicht dokumentiert oder verlorengegangen sind. Um so erfreulicher ist es, wenn verschollene oder unbekannte Werke Reinharts publik werden. So runden die im folgenden vorgestellten acht aquarellierten Federzeichnungen von Reinharts Rheinreise im Jahre 1787 sein ¼uvre nicht nur ab, sondern bereichern es grundsätzlich. Da bislang nur zwei Arbeiten von dieser Tour, die er als Begleiter Herzog Georgs I. von Sachsen-Meiningen unternahm, bekannt waren, ermöglichen sie ganz neue Einblicke in das Werk Reinharts. Die Zeichnungen sind nicht nur wegen ihrer meisterhaften Ausführung von Bedeutung, sondern auch weil sich an ihnen viele Phänomene der Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte der Goethe-Zeit allgemein aufzeigen lassen. - From the Preface: Johann Christian Reinhart (b. 1761, Hof - d. 1847, Rome) ranks as one of the major German artists of the period around 1800. In 1789, he moved to Rome, where together with his friend, Joseph Anton Koch, he became the leading Neo-Classical landscape artist. His studies in Leipzig and Dresden had enabled him to master the art of reproducing topographically accurate landscapes, too. His creative work, therefore, oscillated between views of nature and ideal landscapes. Since Reinhart's contemporaries set equal store by both forms of his landscape art, he was regarded as an esteemed and respected authority by the artists in Rome's international colony. Travellers paid him courtesy visits, fellow-painters sought his advice and he received numerous awards. Given that he enjoyed a long life, his output is rather modest. The explanation sometimes given is that he preferred roaming and hunting in the Roman Campagna to long hours of uninterrupted work in his studio. But this anecdotal evidence would only account, if at all, for the low level of artistic production in the latter years of his life. Moreover, it can be assumed that many of his works, especially his drawings, were never recorded or no longer exist. Hence it is all the more gratifying when missing or unknown works by Reinhart come to light. The eight pen-and-ink watercolour drawings documenting Reinhart's journey along the Rhine in 1787, which are presented below, not only round off his oeuvre, but also greatly enhance it. Given that there were previously only two known works documenting the tour he undertook with Duke George I of Saxe-Meiningen, these eight drawings afford new insights into Reinhart's work. What makes the drawings so important is not just their masterful execution, but also the many artistic and cultural phenomena of the Age of Goethe that they reflect. Einband leicht berieben. - Ensor's prints were produced on a wide variety of paper types: different sorts of parchment or laid paper, gray China, simili-Japan, thin or thick Japan, and the artist tended to select them himself with the printer. Exceptionally, some proofs were printed on parchment, like The Music in the Rue de Flandre in this catalogue, or on old laid paper, like The Elephant's Joke or on other special supports, such as The Cathedral or Village Fair at the Windmill that were made on silk. When he was working with the printer, Adolphe Van Campenhout, for example, from the 1920s, Ensor asked him to print on very white paper, such as Japan Imperial or pearly Japan. Some of Ensor's etchings were also printed in colored inks, including red chalk, bistre, sepia, red, blue, gray, or a mixture of these colors used with black ink. There are some unique impressions too, like The Cathedral printed in blue and in red. However, Ensor never used more than one color of ink on the same plate and did not use the a lapoupec or the reperage techniques of applying color. With the a lapoupee technique, a single etched plate is inked with different colors in various areas. For example, the head of a figure might be inked in pink ink and a tree trunk in brown ink. With reperage different plates are etched, one for each color of the design. These individually colored plates are then printed one by one on the same sheet. Ensor probably did not use these methods because of their technical complexity. To create different colors, the artist instead colored his etchings by hand in brown or black ink, colored pencils, gouache, watercolor, or a combination of these.
