Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This compelling young adult graphic memoir, based on real events, tells the story of Gricelda, a fifteen-year-old Mexican girl who attempts to cross the border into America with her mother and younger brother in search of a better life. Their treacherous journey, filled with both heartbreak and hope, begins in Tijuana, where they are transported from house to house by strangers. Here they meet the mysterious smuggler el Güero, who promises to lead the young family through the mountains and the scorching heat of the desert and beyond. Can he prove himself by keeping them safe during the crossing Will America be the country of dreams like they imagined Or will adjusting to their new life in California be another type of struggle for Gricelda and her family With captivating illustrations inspired by the graffiti and stencil art prevalent during the 2006 political uprising in Oaxaca, as well as local textiles and embroidery, Travesía is Gricelda's first-person account, derived from interviews with author Michelle Gerster and told in both English and Spanish, of crossing the Mexico-US border. Timely and relevant, Travesía is a vibrant and powerful testament to the desperation and resilience of millions of migrating people who endure the pain of leaving their old lives behind to embark on the perilous journey across borders in search of a new life. 100% of royalties from the sale of this book will be donated to Centro Legal de la Raza, a legal services agency protecting and advancing the rights of low-income, immigrant, Black, and Latinx communities through bilingual legal representation, education, and advocacy. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In the beltline of a run-of-the-mill metropolis, an apartment complex called Cambrian Court has become the focal point of an outlandish unfurling, where even the laws of physics are becoming questioned. Embroiled within this psychic plot are three neighbours who are strangers to one another-Nohlan Buckles, Hachiko Yoshitoshi, and Zadie Chan-and whose ordinary lives have become rife with bizarre antagonists: an ogreish landlord, an ominous hooded group called the selfies, and a donkey-faced Saint Peter. The deeper they are drawn into this otherworld the more reality becomes suspect: Nohlan is convinced he's turning into a tree, Hachiko's staging of a kabuki shockingly comes to life, and Zadie unwittingly begins to produce doppelgangers. Without even knowing each other, they come to realize just how dependent and intertwined their lives truly are. In Marc Herman Lynch's debut novel, some people explode, and others come back to life, but at the heart of it all are the fleeting yet indelible connections we make with one another. Darkly funny, lyrically charged, and gothically absurd, Arborescent is a raw and brilliantly imagined depiction of our disconnected contemporary world.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - At age nineteen, the queer narrator of Green Glass Ghosts steps off a bus in downtown Vancouver, a city where the faceless condo towers of the wealthy loom over the streets to the east where folks are just trying to get by, against the deceptively beautiful backdrop of snow-capped mountains and sparkling ocean. It's the year 2000, and the world is still mostly analogue-pagers are the best way to get ahold of someone and resumés are printed out on paper and dropped off in person, and what's this new fad called webmail Our hopeful hero arrives on the West Coast on the cusp of adulthood, fleeing a traumatic childhood in an unsafe family plagued by religious extremism, mental health crises, and abuse in a conservative town not known for accepting difference. They're eager to build a new life among like-minded folks, and before they know it, they've got a job, an apartment, and a relationship, dancing, busking, and making out in bars, parks, art spaces, and apartments across the city. But their search for belonging and stability is buried in drinking, jealousy, and painful memories of the past, distracting the protagonist from their ultimate goal of playing live music and spurring them to an emotional crisis. If they can't learn to care for themselves, how will they ever find true connection and community With haunting illustrations by Gem Hall that conjure the moody, misty urban landscape, Green Glass Ghosts is an evocation of that delicate, aching moment between youth and adulthood when we are trying, and often failing, to become the person we dream ourselves to be. Ages 14 and up. Hall, Gem (illustrator).…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This is Vivek Shraya's sixth book with Arsenal; her previous books include the children's picture book The Boy & the Bindi, the YA collection God Loves Hair, the novel She of the Mountains, the poetry book even this page is white, and the graphic novel Death Threat. She is also the author of the 2020 novel The Subtweet (ECW Press) and the essay I'm Afraid of Men (Penguin Canada). Her experience as a trans woman of South Asian descent informs her books and other projects, which include visual art, music, and fashion. How to Fail as a Popstar is her first stage play; it premiered in 2020 at Canadian Stage in Toronto. A one-person show that combines music and monologue (both performed by Vivek), it chronicles Vivek's journey from a young South Asian boy who was an outcast at school to would-be female pop star. Her 'failure' to achieve superstardom is an exploration of the dichotomy between her ambitions and the barriers put up against her as a trans woman of color. The book includes a foreword by Brendan Healy, a Canadian theater performer who directed the Canadian Stage production. It also includes a section of8 full-color photographs from the Toronto production. There are plans to tour the show (including in the US) but these were interrupted by the pandemic. In the event the pandemic prevents in-person events in spring 2021, Vivek will be doing numerous online excerpts from the show (including her music) in support of the book.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This is Larissa Lai's first poetry book in eleven years (after 2010's Automaton Biographies). Larissa's reputation has grown in the past year as a result of her novel The Tiger Flu, which won the Lambda Literary Award for lesbian fiction in 2019 and is now in its third printing. She also won Lambda Literary's honorary Jim Duggins Outstanding Mid-Career Novelists' Prize in 2020. Iron Goddess of Mercy is inspired by Hong Kong activists over the last year in their clashes with authorities over increasing human rights violations by the Chinese government, culminating most recently in the end of the 'one country/two systems' relationship that has prevailed between China and Hong Kong for the last 23 years. It was also inspired by the #MeToo crisis within Canadian literature when writer and professor Steven Galloway was accused by multiple students of inappropriate behaviour; Galloway was subsequently supported by a cohort of powerful, mostly male writers. For Larissa, these two events evoked memories of the Furies in Greek mythology (the goddesses of vengeance and retribution who punished men for crimes against the natural order): 'I thought, it is not possible to write about the furies, but it might be possible that the furies could write themselves through me.' In Larissa's own words: 'As I fell into it, I began to realize that there were a few particular furies who possessed me-- the ghosts of the Japanese Occupation of Hong Kong in the 1940s and the ghosts of the British occupation of Hong Kong from the mid 19th century until 1997 not the least among them. We have been proxies for so many wars that it is hard for us to understand what it might mean to be 'true' or 'loyal.' If the self is supposed to have a national identity, some Hong Kong people, including me, are done for.' Larissa is engaged with the Asian American and LGBTQ writing community, both generally and through her academic work as an English professor at the University of Calgary; she has done readings with the Asian American Writers Workshop and the Gay Center of New York in the last year in support of The Tiger Flu, and we hope to do more of the same for this book.…
