Original blue-green cloth, spines lettered direct in gilt. Somewhat soiled and marked, edges a little bumped, spines darkened, a little wear to extremities. Initials ?J.D.? to early leaves, traces of adhesive from labels to front boards now removed. A collection of writings by Karl Pearson (1857-1936), covering a wide range of subjects and including papers on statistics, biometrics, socialism, feminism and a lengthy discourse on German passion-plays, many rewritten for book publication or adapted from lectures. Having begun his career in the then-new field of mathematical statistics, Pearson became increasingly interesting in biometrics and eugenics. ?Several of Pearson's essays [.] published in his Chances of Death, and other Studies in Evolution (2 vols., 1897), show that he had already begun to explore scientific ideas that would become central components of his eugenic creed, such as Darwinism, the inheritance of physical and mental characteristics, and the differential fertility of fit and unfit stocks? Ein Beispiel aus frühester Jugend in Paris: "The first events of any importance that have impressed themselves on my memory are the funeral of General Lafayette, who died on the 20th of May 1834, in the same house in the Rue d'Anjou St. Honoré in which my relations occupied an apartment [.]. [.] I can trace [.] a vague sense of the uneasiness and insecurity that pervaded the first years of the reign of Louis Philippe [.]. As we children lay in bed at night, it was no unusual thing for us to be roused from our first sleep by the drums beating the 'général', or the clatter of mounted troops riding down the Faubourg St. Honoré [.]. [.] Many a time have I and my brother been jeered at by diminutive Parisians, our contemporaries, and rudely saluted as 'goddams' or 'sacrés Angliches' when passing through the streets with the short frocks, bare legs, and big turn-down collars, which in those days were exclusively typical of the juveniles of our nation. [.] Those were the days of the 'Anglaises pour rire'" (etc.; vol. 1, p. 10 ff.). - PROVENIENZ : Wappenexlibris überhöht von Hahn für Laurentii [Laurentius] Currie; cf. portrait 1928 of Laurence Currie, Justice of the Peace and Member of Council of India (in: National Portrait Gallery NPG) - Supralibros: Wappen Horace Rumbold of Woodhall: viergeteiltes Schild und Wahlspruch 'Virtutis / Laus / Actio' (cf. In den WarenkorbFirst edition of Lord Warkworth's travel accounts of his journey through Anatolia. He is better known as Henry Algernon George Percy, Earl Percy (1871-1909), a British conservative politician, who held office as under-secretary of state for India and under-secretary of state for foreign affairs. He was the eldest son of Henry Percy, 7th Duke of Northumberland (1846-1918), but he never succeeded his father due to his early death in 1909. Earl Percy was also known as Lord Percy or - until 1899 - as Lord Warkworth; he wrote and published the present work under the latter name.Percy first visited parts of Anatolia, or Asia Minor, shortly after his election to Parliament in 1895, he returned in 1897 and wrote the present book on his return to England. In the present book he not only gives detailed descriptions of the places he visits while travelling - from Constantinople through northern Turkey to Mosul, Aleppo and on his return to the west - but also speaks out about the Armenian question (in favour of the Turks!: was he aware of the extent of the massacres in the years 1894-1896?) and an alliance between Britain and Turkey against the Russians. Percy's travel accounts are illustrated with reproductions of captivating photographs. From the collection of the Edward Pease Public Library in Darlington, UK. With an owner's inscription on the half-title "Edward from Matt (or Watt?) Xmas 1898" and an inscription in pencil on the title-page "Northumberland (Duke of) Henry George Percy". Untrimmed, leaving generous margins but resulting in very slightly frayed edges. Otherwise in very good condition. A fascinating travel account from Anatolia. Green buckram with gold-blocked decorations on the front board and gold lettering on the spine, top edge gilt, black endpapers. With one large folding map of Turkey (ca. 55 x 24 cm), printed in black and red, and 32 plates with half-tone reproductions of photographs. Pages: XVI, 267, [1 blank] pp.
