In den WarenkorbVol. VII, no. 29 (this issue only). Folio. (16) pp. Masthead illustrated with four oval wood engravings of scenes from the state's past (each 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 inches); ads for local businesses. Includes a double-page, wood-engraved map of Arkansas, "New Township Map of the State of Arkansas," is printed on the center pages, a direc…tory of the State Immigration Societies, a schedule of arrivals and departures of mail, railway timetables, and a Little Rock directory of hotels, churches, and fraternal orders, other pieces cover horticulture, recipes, and general news; the front page is largely devoted to promotional information for Hempstead County in the state's southwest. The Spirit of Arkansas was published, 1874-1882, either as a monthly or weekly, encouraging settlement in Arkansas to "all who wish to improve their condition, whether by tilling the soil, merchandizing, manufacturing, or otherwise . [you] will find rare opportunities and a hearty welcome" (Allsopp's History of the Arkansas Press for a Hundred Years and More published in 1922). Samuel Henry Nowlin became the editor in 1878, serving in that capacity until 1882. He was later a representative to the Arkansas state legislature. [see: "American Statesman," by T.W. Herringshaw, published in 1907.] The publication encouraged settlement in Arkansas, "[a]ll who wish to improve their condition, whether by tilling the soil, merchandizing, manufacturing, or otherwise, will find rare opportunities and a hearty welcome here." This copy bears the stamp of "Texas & Arkansas Maps, Guides and Land Circulars . Henry Hannan, Land and Emigration Agent, Swan Creek, Ohio" on the front page and in the margin of the map. OCLC shows 12 locations for this periodical, but a check shows that at least three are microform or internet resource holdings and a fourth is a ghost; the others show scattered issues or runs. Thumbnail-size chip at lower corner (affecting a few letters), spine partly eroded, but a very good, partly unopened copy, never bound with other issues. (#6313).
