Quoting from the flap of the dust jacket: Fred Urquhart has compiled this anthology of stories of men at war. He has done it from no spirit of sabre-rattling imperialism and with no intent to glorify bloodshed. His reason for compiling it was to show the younger generation when they reached military age exactly what war is like and exactly how men behave and can be expected to behave face to face with the inhuman and superhuman realities of organized slaughter. Please find then: Men at War the Best War Stories of All Time by Fred Urquhart. This small hard cover book (5 ¾ x 8 ¾ inches 615 pages) was published by Arco Publications of London dated 1957 and the First Edition (10000 copies) so stated. The book is bound in bright red cloth with gilt titles on the spine and protected by a printed paper dust jacket. There are articles and essays by many well-known authors in this anthology including: Hemingway-T.E. Lawrence-Kipling-Forester-Waugh-Mailer-Flaubert-Orwell-Precott-Stendhal-Churchill-to mention just a few. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The dust jacket shows considerable edge wear with tears and chips both top and bottom. As you will see in the photos, however, it is still largely intact and performing its function. Accordingly, the hard covers are clean and the gilt titles bright with a hint of dust-dulling and minor bumping. Inside a former owner has left his neat bookplate and an embossed stamp on the front endpaper which also has a very minor blemish of soiling at the base of the pages. Otherwise, the interior pages are clean and bright and unmarked throughout. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. There are some lines of soiling on the bottom edge of the pages and some tiny dots as well on the top edge.
