Most research carried out today into the materials of paintings concentrates on their properties in order to further understand the consequences of conservation treatments - both immediate and long term - and the effects of earlier treatments. This book contributes significantly to the selection of appropriate and controllable cleaning methods for varnished and unvarnished paint surfaces. It is a distillation of many years' experience of formulating a cleaning treatment for a given object. While the case histories describe nineteenth- and twentieth-century paintings and furniture exclusively, and may emphasise the cleaning of never-varnished surfaces to an extent unusual in some conservators' experience, the general principles are applicable to the surface cleaning of both traditional and modern paint media. These, in fact, may be found on sculptures, ethnographic materials, and even textile and paper supports, as well as on paintings, gilded surfaces and furniture. Aqueous methods are certainly worth considering for those surfaces which cannot be cleaned safely by the more traditional methods based on the use of solvents.…

The many pieces of embroidery by Mary Queen of Scots or by Elizabeth Countess of Shrewsbury ('Bess of Hardwick') are among the best-known and most fascinating examples of historical embroidery. However, many questions surrounding their meaning and purpose - and, above all, the sources and patterns used for their imagery (including birds, fish, flowers, monograms, emblems and other devices) - remain unanswered. In 1548, the five-year-old Queen of Scots left her native Scotland to begin her French upbringing as the future Queen of France and it was here that she learned the art of decorative needlework, continuing with the craft during the last twenty years of her exile and confinement in England. Many of her embroideries have survived and can be seen at Oxburgh Hall (Norfolk), the Victoria and Albert Museum and elsewhere, but many more have since disappeared. In this new study Michael Bath not only describes and illustrates the surviving embroideries, but also documents from early records a large number of those that have disappeared. Many of these embroidered panels use emblems, combining a symbolic image with a learned adage, and Professor Bath shows how, in their own day, these were believed to hold moral, political and religious messages which expressed the Catholic queen's values, purposes and intentions. For this reason we find records of them in the forgotten files of the Elizabethan secret services. Mary's emblematic embroideries shed new light on issues surrounding one of the most controversial figures in English and Scottish history. At the same time, this new study shows exactly what sources - prints, engravings, book illustrations - the embroiderers drew on for their patterns, and it includes the first full catalogue raisonne of all the known embroideries created by these two remarkable women. …

The Standing Caliph coinage of the late seventh century has a unique place in Islamic numismatics and in the early history of the Umayyad empire. It is arguably the first truly 'Islamic' copper coinage, but it is very different to all later Islamic coinage in that the coins bear an image of the caliph. The rare examples struck in gold have always excited interest, but the much more common coppers have been somewhat neglected until relatively recently. These coins were often crudely engraved or badly struck and most major museum collections just included a few worn or corroded examples. Consequently the great museum catalogues produced at the end of the nineteenth century only illustrated a handful of examples at the most. The situation improved considerably with the publication of John Walker's British Museum catalogue in 1956, but this is now somewhat out of date, expensive to buy and, at the time of writing, not available on-line. Later catalogues (Ashmolean and Dumbarton Oaks collections) are useful, but not comprehensive. In recent years a number of important articles have been written, but these are scattered across various specialist publications. The net result is that an archaeologist, for example, faced with a worn example of a Standing Caliph coin may need to spend a considerable amount of time in a major numismatic library before he has reliably identified the coin. The aim, therefore, has been to produce a comprehensive, but straightforward, guide to the series which can be read as a narrative by those who are interested, but can also be used to quickly identify and catalogue any Standing Caliph coin. The book is therefore primarily aimed at numismatists, archaeologists and collectors, but it is hoped that it will also be of use to those with a more general interest in early Islamic history and art.…
