Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Governor Francis Nicholson of Virginia was a proven pirate hunter and law enforcer. By the spring of 1700, his concerns about pirate activity in the Chesapeake Bay and rivers of Virginia had reached a fever pitch. Nicholson was unimpressed with the HMS Essex Prize and its commander, John Aldred, who had been tasked with keeping colonial shores safe from smuggling. The HMS Shoreham was sent to Virginia to secure the area from the scourge of piracy, and its arrival brought some relief. The arrival of the ship La Paix, commanded by buccaneer captain Louis Guittar, brought Nicholson to high alert and ready for action. Author Jeremy R. Moss tells the stories of Nicholson and Guittar through their fateful battle on the Lynnhaven Bay.--cover.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Wyoming State Legislature approved the formation of Park County--named in honor of Yellowstone National Park--on February 15, 1909. Early fur traders such as John Colter and George Drouillard traversed the area in the early 1800s, opening trade with the indigenous Crow and Shoshone. In the middle of the 19th century, buffalo hunters, miners, ranchers, and homesteaders arrived and displaced the indigenous people in the area, establishing trading posts and the cowboy town of Meeteetse. The region's natural wonders inspired conservationists to lobby Congress to create Yellowstone National Park in 1872 and Shoshone National Forest in 1891. In the 1890s, Buffalo Bill Cody spearheaded an effort to irrigate arid lands and established productive farms and new towns such as Powell and Cody. The scenery and outdoor recreation opportunities lured many tourists to the area, including Ernest Hemingway and Amelia Earhart. From the mountain peaks to the river valleys, Park County offers insight into the extraordinary history of the American West.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Toledo, Peoria & Western (TP&W) Railway has made a big impact on Illinois and railroading for over 150 years. Originally chartered in 1849 as the Peoria & Oquawka, the TP&W provided an important bypass for trains to avoid the often congested rail network in Chicago. Train wrecks on the TP&W over the years resulted in improved and safer technology that is still in use today nationally. Conflicts between the railroad's management and employees led to the creation and development of national railroad labor unions. On a local level, the TP&W served many local businesses and made an effort to establish positive relationships with communities that it passed through. At one time, Toledo, Peoria & Western was a name known in virtually every household in the area. The TP&W is still operating today and serves many businesses along its route, including grain elevators and factories, and interchanges freight cars with other railroads in the area for transportation around the country.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Settled by miners and Mormons after the Civil War and incorporated in 1884, Park City grew into one of the world's most prestigious mining camps. Known primarily for its richness in silver, Park City miners also extracted lead, zinc, gold, and copper from the surrounding hills. With the town and its mines located at over 7,000 feet above sea level, miners faced brutal winters to unleash treasure for the nation. As the mines grew, so too did the town, attracting businesspeople, grocers, doctors, lawyers, teachers, and more to the area, in addition to miners and prospectors seeking to strike it rich. While most miners faced tough lives and died young, some did create legacies beyond their wildest dreams. Park City made many a millionaire, including David Keith, Thomas Kearns, R.C. Chambers, John Judge, John Daly, and Suzanne Bransford Emery Holmes Delitch Engalitcheff (also known as the Silver Queen). From mines large (like the Silver King and the Ontario) to small (like the Nelson Queen), Park City's early history is that of the triumphs and tragedies of mining, the ebbs and flows of the community, and the metals that made it all happen.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Winona County, located in the Driftless Area of southeastern Minnesota, was organized in 1854 by an act of the territorial legislature. Following treaties with the local Native Americans, many eastern farmers came to the frontier to settle on a rich land obtained through a system of land transfers called patents. As the area opened to the settlers, railroads were provided with land on which to lay track across the county to bring farm products to market and carry supplies to the interior. In addition to the railroads, roadways were established and villages sprang up at regular intervals where businessmen settled to provide goods and services locally. Scattered throughout the county, churches and cemeteries were established, and one-room schoolhouses were built. As the county entered the 20th century, a system of commerce had been well established, and goods and services easily flowed about the area. However, the 20th century was also a time of change; new technologies were developed, some farms grew while other disappeared, some villages died, and the old ways were cast aside. Winona County uses rarely viewed images from the collections of the Winona County Historical Society.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - For over 75 years, generations of children and their parents called LeSourdsville Lake and Americana Amusement Park their home for the summer. Despite the popularity of Kings Island, one of the largest amusement parks in the country located only about 20 miles away, LeSourdsville Lake thrived because of its family atmosphere, the tradition of receiving a great value for the money, and the attention paid to detail by the management. The park featured the legendary Screechin' Eagle roller coaster, rated one of the top 25 wooden coasters in the country by coaster enthusiasts. It was also home to the country's wettest log flume, where riders were guaranteed to get soaked. Although the park closed permanently in 2002, the area is being transformed into one of the largest recreational parks in the area and will feature an amphitheater, children's play area, walking trails, and a portion of the nation's largest paved trail network.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The village of Eagle is a small town with a big smile. Located within the southern Kettle Moraine Forest and a large prairie, the town is identified by its yellow, smiley-faced water tower. Eagle's modern history began in 1836, when three prospectors came across an expansive prairie with a large bald-headed eagle hovering over it. The early pioneers settled in small communities that blurred into the neighboring towns of Ottawa, North Prairie, Mukwonago, East Troy, and Palmyra. In 1851, the railroad made Eagle Centre the metropolis, thus stifling Jericho, Palestine, Melendy's Prairie, and Eagleville. Eagle was nearly named Diamond City when it became known that a diamond had been discovered there in 1876. The 1900s saw a transition from wheat and sheep to dairy farming and then to crops of corn and soybeans. Some land was returned to nature as the Kettle Moraine State Forest, and others turned into housing developments and industrial parks. The 21st century brought the acceleration of urban sprawl to once rural areas.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - When Sherman's first settler, Dearing Dorman, came to live in the town in 1823, he laid claim to land that was plentiful with trees and rich soil. With the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, more settlers started making their way to this area of Chautauqua County, helping the town of Sherman to grow rapidly. And with French Creek running through the township, it seemed only logical that the village of Sherman would start to take shape near the creek. Sherman's history runs deep through these early settlers and is evident in the town's commitment to keep its history and traditions alive through the Yorker Museum and annual Sherman School Alumni Reunion and Sherman Day celebrations.
