Conflicts between the railroad's management and employees led to the creation and development of national railroad labor unions. The TP&W is still operating today and serves many businesses along its route, including grain elevators and factories, and interchanges freight cars with other railroads in the area for transportation around the country.

Following treaties with the local Native Americans, many eastern farmers came to the frontier to settle on a rich land obtained through a system of land transfers called patents. As the area opened to the settlers, railroads were provided with land on which to lay track across the county to bring farm products to market and carry supplies to the interior. In addition to the railroads, roadways were established and villages sprang up at regular intervals where businessmen settled to provide goods and services locally. Scattered throughout the county, churches and cemeteries were established, and one-room schoolhouses were built. As the county entered the 20th century, a system of commerce had been well established, and goods and services easily flowed about the area. However, the 20th century was also a time of change; new technologies were developed, some farms grew while other disappeared, some villages died, and the old ways were cast aside. Despite the popularity of Kings Island, one of the largest amusement parks in the country located only about 20 miles away, LeSourdsville Lake thrived because of its family atmosphere, the tradition of receiving a great value for the money, and the attention paid to detail by the management. The park featured the legendary Screechin' Eagle roller coaster, rated one of the top 25 wooden coasters in the country by coaster enthusiasts. It was also home to the country's wettest log flume, where riders were guaranteed to get soaked. Although the park closed permanently in 2002, the area is being transformed into one of the largest recreational parks in the area and will feature an amphitheater, children's play area, walking trails, and a portion of the nation's largest paved trail network.

The early pioneers settled in small communities that blurred into the neighboring towns of Ottawa, North Prairie, Mukwonago, East Troy, and Palmyra. In 1851, the railroad made Eagle Centre the metropolis, thus stifling Jericho, Palestine, Melendy's Prairie, and Eagleville. Eagle was nearly named Diamond City when it became known that a diamond had been discovered there in 1876. The 1900s saw a transition from wheat and sheep to dairy farming and then to crops of corn and soybeans. Some land was returned to nature as the Kettle Moraine State Forest, and others turned into housing developments and industrial parks. The 21st century brought the acceleration of urban sprawl to once rural areas.
