Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Ventura County has its roots in the founding of Mission San Buenaventura during the Spanish era (1769-1821). During the Mexican era (1822-1846), expansive mission lands were divided and granted out as ranchos for individual landownership to those with political influence and to former soldiers for loyal service during the war. When California became a state in 1850, settlers, prospectors, and developers began to purchase rancho lands. Ventura County became one of the most productive agricultural and oil-rich lands in the state and country. Farmland dominated much of the county's landscape in the early years--oranges were its most popular fruit, and sugar beets were its prized commodity. Although the county still has an agricultural landscape in many of its cities and towns, the county is a patchwork of farms, islands, high-tech businesses, and military defense installations. It is as diverse as its people.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The history of broadcasting in Las Vegas began with the first radio station, KGIX, to crackle the airwaves in the 1920s, started by J.M. Jack Heaton, who ran the Las Vegas railroad operation. By the 1940s, the railroad was no longer a major factor; instead, legalized gaming and the Strip drove the growth of the city and, consequently, radio and television. Maxwell Kelch, who was responsible for leading the effort to publicize Las Vegas as a tourist destination, launched the second and oldest existing radio station, KENO. Radio and TV personalities such as Coffee Jim Dandy, Red Mcilvaine, Hal Morelli, Hank Thornley, and Walt Reno were household names to Las Vegans in the 1960s and 1970s. From the 1940s and 1950s, when every radio station called a Strip hotel home, to the mega-consolidation of the mid-1990s, when big corporations took control of many of the Las Vegas signals, the world of radio and television in Las Vegas has evolved significantly. Today, Las Vegas is the 30th largest radio market in the United States.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Warren was founded in 1798 as an agricultural concern and, within two years, became the county seat of Trumbull County. By the early 20th century, the city was the Silicon Valley of the Midwest with the Packard brothers growing the community as a hub for technology and manufacturing. Warren's population more than doubled between 1910 and 1920 as steel production boomed, placing Warren on a track to be dubbed an All-American City by the National Civic League in 1954. Recreational options in neighborhood parks, local hotels, and eateries were abundant. Over 180 postcards in this book will illuminate the journey Warren took from the 19th century to the later decades of the 20th century.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This is the second Images of America book showcasing the rich history of the town of Burrillville. Incorporated in 1806, the town grew in prosperity because of the many woolen mills that sprang up along its rivers and streams. This photographic history tells the story of how Burrillville's citizens lived and worked. One of the town's most prominent mill owners in the 20th century was Austin T. Levy, who purchased the mill in Harrisville. This generous man gave back to the community and created better living and working conditions for his workers in extraordinary ways. Spring Lake is featured, with fascinating photographs showing the lake as a popular summer destination. Other topics covered within include floods, blizzards, hurricanes, parades, farms, and older forms of transportation.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The village of Washingtonville and town of Blooming Grove contain a rich history that extends from early settlement by the Lenape people of the Delaware Nation to colonial European settlement in the 18th century and expanded regional development through the 19th and 20th centuries. Blooming Grove is naturally defined by Schunnemunk Mountain (Lenape for excellent fireplace) and the Moodna Creek, which is referred to as Waoraneck by the Lenape and Murderer's Creek in early written documents. The fertile soil along the creek's banks attracted farming and milling industries to the region. Despite the loss of historic structures due to floods, fires, and other disasters, many of Washingtonville's iconic landmarks still remain. Some visible reminders of Blooming Grove's past include the Moffat Library of Washingtonville, a national and state historic landmark; Brotherhood Winery, established in 1839 and considered the oldest winery in the United States; and the Moodna Viaduct, which has been in continuous use since its completion in 1908.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - At the beginning of the 20th century, the term oceanography was merely a few decades old, and few investigations of the oceans, which cover nearly three-fourths of the planet's surface, had taken place. This is the story of an institution that catapulted the field into the forefront of science--first as a pioneer of marine biology, then as a source of wartime environmental intelligence, and most recently as a messenger warning of humanity's effect on nature and a source of solutions to the problem.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Hyde-Murphy Company was one of the largest and most renowned specialty woodworking mills in the United States. The company was a producer of high-quality architectural millwork and constructed elegant homes, businesses, and public buildings around the country, with offices in New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Washington, DC. The company was founded in 1901 when two families merged their business interests. Joseph S. Hyde owned a sawmill in Ridgway, in the heart of the Pennsylvania lumber industry, covered with valuable, mature, and virgin timber forests. Walter P. Murphy owned a planing mill downstream on the Allegheny River in Freeport. Hyde floated his lumber downriver where Murphy turned the wood into architectural products. It was natural for the two families to merge to manufacture high-quality woodworking products. Murphy moved to Ridgway, and the company flourished. The business survived a devastating fire, rebuilding and prospering, and its artistic, distinctive woodwork can be seen today in the Library of Congress, the Pentagon, the Supreme Court, and the Smithsonian Institution. The Hyde-Murphy Company ceased operation in 1961.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Butte, Montana, began in 1864 as a small placer gold mining camp. By 1870, the placer deposits were depleted, and most miners left. A few remaining miners found significant silver ore in the nearby quartz lodes, but by the late 1870s, copper was the major ore in the district, and Butte became The Richest Hill on Earth. Thousands of immigrants came to Butte from throughout Europe to operate the underground mines, and the city grew to an unofficial estimate of about 90,000 residents in 1917-1918. The population of Butte slowly declined to about 35,000 residents when fewer miners were necessary after open-pit mining began in 1955. Today, Butte remains a city of great character and cultural diversity. The postcards in this book illustrate some of its history.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Rapid City Army Air Base was constructed in 1942 and used as a training location for B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bomber aircrews throughout the duration of World War II. After the war, the newly renamed Rapid City Air Force Base (AFB) led the nation's strategic bombardment force, deploying B-29 Superfortresses to Britain during the Berlin Blockade and later flying the B-36 Peacemaker heavy bomber. In 1953, Pres. Dwight D. Eisenhower renamed the base for Brig. Gen. Richard E. Ellsworth, who was killed during a mission over Burgoyne's Cove, Newfoundland. From 1960 to 1994, Ellsworth AFB was a Strategic Air Command superbase containing two legs of the American Strategic Nuclear Triad--heavy bomber aircraft (B-52 Stratofortresses and B-1B Lancers) and land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles (Titan and Minuteman). Today, the personnel at Ellsworth AFB continue to build upon the storied legacy of the South Dakota base, projecting American airpower around the world.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The New York Central System was a huge, 10,000-mile railroad in the Northeast, stretching from New York City to Chicago and Boston to St. Louis. This book focuses on the St. Lawrence Division as it was during the 1940s-1960s; this was the glory period of its greatest modern-day years. This non-main line division, located in Upstate New York, contained more than 600 miles of track, including branches and running rights. The mid-20th century was a time of enormous change in the railroad industry. New technology affording economy, competition in transportation, reduced labor, and politics would be some of the factors leading to the change. Neighboring division crews had great respect for their Hojack colleagues, as was the division's nickname.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - As the 20th century got under way, Asbury Park was booming. Real estate advertisements promoted a residential resort where country meets the sea. The nearly one-square-mile gridded municipality attracted individuals who saw opportunities, from architects and artists to entrepreneurs and people looking for employment. But with the death of its founder and leading benefactor, James A. Bradley, and the rise of machine politics under Mayor Clarence E.F. Hetrick, Asbury Park's civic and economic fortunes started to change. In World War II's long aftermath, suburbs, shopping malls, and modern amusement destinations sprang up outside its municipal borders. Its once-bustling economy faltered, and civil unrest festered until 1970, when it turned violent. It took more than 10 years for new changes to find their way to the drawing boards. But it was in the 21st century that new business and civic leaders with a more inclusive pioneering spirit started turning Asbury Park's fortunes around.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - On Christmas Eve 1917, an overcrowded, out-of-control streetcar exited the Mount Washington tunnel, crashing into pedestrians. Twenty-three were killed and more than eighty injured in the worst transit incident in Pittsburgh history. The crash scene on Carson Street was chaotic as physicians turned the railway offices into a makeshift hospital and bystanders frantically sought to remove the injured and strewn bodies from the wreckage. Most of the victims, many women and children, were from the close-knit neighborhoods of Knoxville, Beltzhoover and Mount Oliver. In the aftermath, public outrage over the tragedy led to criminal prosecution, civil suits and the bankruptcy of the Pittsburgh Railways Company, which operated the service. Author Mary Jane Kuffner Hirt explores the tragic history of the Mount Washington transit tunnel disaster.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Positioned at the heart of Nassau County, Garden City sits like a crown jewel among the communities on Long Island. And it has a history to match. The brainchild of textile mogul Alexander Turney Stewart, who bought the last of the treeless Hempstead Plains to build his village, Garden City would emerge as the Eden of Long Island, a community for people with refined tastes but who believed in living a virtuous life. Thanks to his devoted wife, Cornelia Clinch Stewart, Stewart's legacy was furthered with the creation of the iconic Cathedral of the Incarnation and the Cathedral Schools of St. Paul and St. Mary. The Garden City Company later ensured that Garden City would remain an ideal place to live and to raise a family. But there is more. Its genteel reputation aside, Garden City showed the entire country that it could also meet a higher purpose, playing a vital role in Long Island's Golden Age of Aviation and during World War I with the formation of Camp Mills. With so much history to draw from, Garden City is a community nonpareil, a proud product of an extraordinary heritage.
