Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - European settlers came to the area now known as Walkertown as early as the 1750s. In 1769, Robert Walker was granted a license renewal for a tavern. From 1850 through the early 20th century, the local economy was dependent on farming, lumber manufacturing, grain milling, and merchandising. Tobacco manufacturing began early in the 19th century and became a thriving industry for the Sullivan, Booe, Poindexter, and Crews families. The Roanoke & Southern Railroad began serving Walkertown in 1889, and with it, the availability of larger markets spurred the growth of industry. The Leight Lumber Company was established near the depot around 1890 and prospered by making boxes for manufacturers and lumber for construction. The Walkertown Chair Company, begun in 1903, flourished until a devastating fire destroyed most of the buildings in 1940. The Walkertown Roller Mill, built by Robah Payne in 1900, has changed hands a few times and is now the oldest continuously operating business in Walkertown.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Launched in an era when speed and grandeur went hand in hand, the RMS Queen Mary is the last survivor of the golden age of ocean liners. From the time of her maiden voyage in 1936, passengers crossed the North Atlantic cocooned in luxury. Movie stars, tycoons, politicians, and royalty shared a ship with everyday people, for whom this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. During World War II, the Queen Mary ferried countless soldiers safely across the sea and, at war's end, carried their brides and babies home to America. Refurbished and polished to her previous glory, the Queen Mary continued to carry passengers until her final voyage to Long Beach in 1967. The RMS Queen Mary now serves as a floating hotel and tourist attraction, a living testament to her glamorous history, a generous showcase of art, and a magnificent example of a time when oceans could be crossed in both comfort and beauty.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Kearney, Missouri, is just 25 miles northeast of Kansas City, and though it's a quiet farming and ranching community, its close proximity to the downtown area makes it the perfect place for commuters who want a small town to come home to. Officially incorporated in 1869 and most likely named for Charles E. Kearney, president of the Kansas City and Cameron Railroad, Kearney is best known as the birthplace of outlaw Jesse James and his brother Frank. The James brothers joined with the Younger brothers to form a gang that terrorized the Midwest in the chaotic years following the Civil War. Although the James brothers worked only to enrich their own fortunes, a Robin Hood mythology has developed around them. Kearney encourages the celebration of the era, if not the actual man. Jesse James Festival in September is a time for watching rodeos, eating kettle corn, playing mud volleyball, and enjoying world-class concerts at the town's amphitheater. Kearney is the fastest-growing city in Missouri and a point of access to other parts of the state. Its schools are among the best in the country, and the village takes pride in its 'business friendly' attitude.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - From its beginning as a poultry powerhouse to World War II Navy town and to Horse Town USA, Norco has been known over time as a community of go-getters and dreamers with unparalleled volunteerism, stubbornly protecting a rural way of life. Founder Rex Clark wished for families to be self-sustaining with what they could grow and raise on their property; wounded Marine Johnny Winterholler, against incredible odds, led the way for other disabled veterans as the star of the famed wheelchair basketball team the Rolling Devils; and Tamara Ivie fulfilled her impossible dream to play professional baseball. And regular folks, known once as 'Acres of Neighbors,' stepped up to create a city of 'elbow room,' stopping cold, big-money developers wishing to cut the community into small lots. Today, Norco is an equestrian paradise with trails on most streets and plentiful open space. For decades, this small community has produced activists, ballplayers, college presidents, physicians, actors, cowboys, and lots of Norconians who give back to the community that raised them.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The heart of Bedford-Stuyvesant is still found in the near-forgotten settlement of Brooklyn's Bedford Corners, a Dutch township colonized in 1667, where ancient Native American trails determined its now major thoroughfares, and where Colonial patriots fought the British in the country's struggle for independence. Bedford-Stuyvesant remained a quiet farming hamlet until the 1880s when rapid subway transportation, construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, and the burgeoning population of Manhattan combined to forge one of America's first and finest suburban communities. Bedford-Stuyvesant details the evolution of this neighborhood, home to the nation'ssecond largest African American community, and it documents how this urban center is now finally enjoying new regard for its wealth of architecture and its notable place in American history.
