Paperback. Zustand: Good. This balanced account of the Salem Village witchcraft trials, including the events leading up to them, was first printed in 1702. The book was written by Reverend John Hale, the pastor of the church in Beverly, Massachusetts. He concludes with the theory that it was Satan, not the witches, who used the manipulation of objects to afflict others. Rev. Hale had been the preacher in Salem since 1664, and was a participant in the trials, attending them and praying with the accused. This eyewitness account is one of the rarest, having been reprinted once in 1771 and again in 1973. …

Paperback. Zustand: Good. A popular guidebook during the western expansion and a valuable collectible today, The Emigrants Guide was first published in 1845. While the book introduced those heading west to the beauty and habitable nature of the Pacific coast, it had considerable shortcomings - it was the guide used by the ill-fated Donner Party. As a corrective, Randolph Marcy published a more accurate guide, The Prairie Traveler (also available from Applewood Books).…

Paperback. Zustand: Fair. Daniel Boone: His Own Story by Colonel Daniel Boone & The Adventures of Daniel Boone, The Kentucky Rifleman by Francis Lister Hawks. Before Davy Crockett and Kit Carson came along to share the wild frontier legend, there lived a pioneer and trailblazer named Daniel Boone - an extraordinary man, who, with his brother, Squire, explored the howling wilderness and helped settle the State of Kentucky. When this true life account was first published in the early 1800s, it served to set the record straight once and for all on the mythic Daniel Boone, and established him as a new American hero. The first part of the book is told in Boone's own words and spans twenty-five years of his life, from 1769, through the Revolutionary War, and up to 1784. The second section was written by Francis Lister Hawks as a biography, and traces Boone's life from childhood on up to his death in 1818. The book paints a vivid portrait of Boone, and allows us to experience his times-life with Shawanese, Cherokees, Wyandots, Tawas and other Indians, as well as the trials of everyday pioneer life in the mountains, the woods, and along the rivers-and takes the reader to the first white settlement in Kentucky, named Boonesborough in his honor. …

Hardback. Zustand: Good. Originally published in 1871, the Jewish Cookery Book was the first Jewish cookbook published in America. The book offers practical, down-to-earth advice for American-born Jews who did not have the benefit of a traditional Jewish education. Not much is known about the book's author, Mrs. Esther Levy. She was born Esther Jacobs, probably in England, and most likely lived in Philadelphia. Her book, however, is a milestone in American Jewish history.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Solomon Northup was born a free black man in upstate New York in 1808. By 1841, he had become a husband, a father, a raftsman, and a talented fiddle-player. That year, while his family was away, he agreed to accompany two men to Washington DC, on what he thought would be a brief trip performing for a circus. Instead, these new employers turned out to be con men, and Northup was drugged, kidnapped, and sold into slavery. Northup was transported to New Orleans and remained a slave for the next twelve years, working for a number of masters in Louisiana--some brutal, some kind. Although Northup never stopped longing for home and thinking about how he could escape, it seemed impossible to trust anyone with the facts of his life. He remained a slave for a dozen years, until he finally met a Canadian abolitionist who was able to get a letter to his family and eventually gained his freedom. After his release, Northup told his story to David Wilson, an upstate New York-based white lawyer and legislator. Northup's memoir, edited by Wilson, was published in 1853 as Twelve Years A Slave. Northup's story and his firsthand observations of plantation life and the cruel reality of slavery make this book an important document of the American south and American history.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Originally published in 1913, this is a fascinating reproduction of the first American Girl Scout Handbook. Author W.J. Hoxie--a naturalist--included tips and tricks for provisioning a camp, tying knots, tending the injured, and telling time by the stars. In 1916, How Girls Can Help Their Country was adapted by Juliette Low into a newer version of the Girl Scout Handbook. The ranks of the American Girl Scouts have grown from the original eighteen members to the millions of members still active today. Through the decades, each Girl Scout has used some edition of the handbook to learn about everything from camping and first-aid, to "housewifery" and patriotism. Although the roles of women have changed over the years, the importance of the handbook has not. Complete with photographs and diagrams, this centennial edition serves as a reference for life in the times of the great-, great-great-, or even great-great-great-grandmothers of today's Girl Scouts.…

Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. A byword for initiative and determination, A Message to Garcia recounts a soldier's unquestioning acceptance and fulfillment of his orders. Set in the days of mounting tension between the United States and Spain that would soon culminate in the Spanish-American War, it recounts President William McKinley's wish to communicate with Calixto Garcia, a commander of the Cuban rebels. An able young lieutenant is chosen to deliver the vital dispatch, and his mission becomes an imperishable tale of courage, initiative, and resourcefulness. Except -- there was no message from McKinley, and the brave soldier was actually a bungling spy. But the press of 1899 didn't allow the truth to stand in the way of a compelling story, and author Elbert Hubbard's dramatic fiction satisfied the public appetite for a heroic narrative during the buildup to the war. The inspirational legend remains essential reading for motivational speakers, business executives, and military officers as well as trainers and participants in workshops on leadership. This edition also features other examples of Hubbard's charming brand of homespun American philosophy and can-do spirit, including fourteen additional essays, thirty-two contemplations, and Helpful HInts for Business Helpers, which Hubbard wrote under the name Fra Elbertus.…

Hardback. Zustand: Good. This is a nice collection of fairy tales that is sure to please young readers and the adults reading to them alike. The writing is very beautiful and the book contains several gorgeous illustrations to accompany the stories and bring them to life through their beautiful artwork. -- Of Stacks and CupsThe author of Little Women possessed a special gift for capturing children's imaginations, and she wrote these fairy tales when she was just sixteen years old. Louisa May Alcott created the fanciful stories for the amusement of the daughter of a family friend, Ralph Waldo Emerson. Populated by elves, brownies, and other supernatural creatures, the fables conclude with memorable lessons for young readers about the power of love and kindness and the importance of responsibility. In The Frost-King, steadfast Violet approaches the fearsome ruler of winter in order to bring warmth and sunshine to the flowers back home. Lily-Bell and Thistledown recounts a wayward spirit's attempts to reform; and Ripple, the Water-Spirit tells of the sacrifice and rewards involved in keeping a promise. These and six additional stories and poems are accompanied by charmingly evocative illustrations.…
