By taking part in the making of a lavishly illustrated book, Campbell established a method of self-promotion for an aspiring architect which was to last the century. Vitruvius Britannicus, a record of the principal private and public British buildings of the time, was prepared by a group of booksellers active in the print trade during 1714. At a fairly late stage in the preparation of this costly enterprise they appear to have employed Campbell to give a more up-to-date and specifically architectural slant to volumes which would otherwise have been of a more conventionally topographical character. Campbell was presented as the author on the title-page; he probably wrote the introduction as well as the brief text which accompanied the plates for each building. Most importantly, he was able to include many of his own (mostly unexecuted) designs. ODNB. Thomas Balbirnie (1816-1867) was an architect and surveyor. Thomas travelled to the United States in 1850 and was the architect for some several structures in the city of Baltimore, including the Madison Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church.

Octavo (175 x 110 mm.), recent quarter calf, marbled paper boards, spine with raised bands, blind ruled compartments with central bline floral stamp, gilt date and calf title. With typographic half title and title printed in red and black, pp. (24), 428, (3), with 16 copper engraved maps by Robert Morden, 2 leaves with margin repair, otherwise in good condition. Patrick Gordon's 'Geography Anatomiz'd' was first published in 1693. It proved a popular text being issued through 1754 in London utilising three different series of engraved maps. This first series included maps were engraved by Robert Morden (fl. 1669-d. 1703) and were first included in his own 'Geography Rectified'. Morden was a co-publisher of this work for the first three editions of 1693, 1699 and 1702. This is the fourth edition published in 1704 in which his name is removed from the title, the first issued following his death. The maps are apparently unaltered apart from the world map which now bears 'Page 86 & 87' in the small lower cartouche. This edition not in the British Library. From 1722 a new series of maps by John Senex were included and in 1754 the maps were by Emanuel Bowen.
