In den WarenkorbSecond edition, revised and enlarged, an attractive near-contemporary binding. Samuel Ayscough (1745-1804), was the assistant to the principal librarian of the British Museum and was affectionately known as the "prince of index makers" (ODNB). The works of Samuel Ayscough and his peers "were monuments of lexicographic labour, sc…holarship, and erudition in their own right" (Shore, p. 113). This work was first published in 1790 and was the first ever concordance to Shakespeare's plays. Jaggard, p. 564. Daniel Shore, "Shakespeare's Construction", Shakespeare Quarterly, vol. 66, no. 2, 2015. Octavo. Near-contemporary red straight-grain morocco by White of Pall Mall, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, triple gilt fillet to covers, floral gilt roll to turn-ins, double comb marbled endpapers, edges gilt, blue silk bookmarker. Newspaper clipping on Othello mounted to front pastedown. A few marks to covers, scuff to front cover sometime neatly repaired, front inner hinge split but sound, occasional spot of foxing, slight creases and single closed tear to final leaves. A very good copy.
