Neuware - The Great Western Railway was always different to the rest of the railways, and that was still the position when in 1955 British Railways announced their Modernisation Plan that would see steam replaced by diesels and electrics. The rest of the railway regions opted for diesel electric locos…but the Western would be different as they went for diesel hydraulics. The first entered service in 1957 and by 1964 six different classes were introduced. Unfortunately there were problems with them all, which were largely solved as experience was gained with them, but the BRB was in favour of standardisation using the diesel electric type and they saw the Western hydraulics as non-standard, which resulted in their early withdrawal from service by 1977.This book of mostly unpublished colour pictures taken by George Woods shows them in service from 1966 to 2019 and also includes the Class 50 locos that became their replacements.

Freight traffic was still abundant, with marshalling yards active and many branch lines still operating. There were hundreds of coll…ieries. In the early 1980s Sectorisation arrived. The freight division was separated from the passenger side and further sub-divided into the different freight sectors. New locomotives were introduced, and the older types started to disappear. As the eighties progressed the freight sector was constantly changing. The mixed freight train became a thing of the past but new traffic flows developed, particularly in containers and aggregates. The coal sector steadily declined and branch lines became disused. In the early nineties three new freight companies were created in anticipation of Privatisation and then finally Privatisation itself arrived, with all freight traffic being taken over by an American company.It was a period of enormous change and adaptation, and the story is told here through the images of two photographers who were keen observers of the railway scene throughout the whole of that period.

A variety of liveries was carried. By the mid-1970s, out went the traditional liveries to be replaced by a uniform 'spray green' wit…h white roof for route buses, while coaches initially carried a livery of buff and white.The start of the 1980s saw the importation of complete vehicles from the UK. AEC Swifts were sourced from London Transport, while a variety of Bedford and Ford coaches started to appear carrying bodies by Plaxton and Duple. Other types included Bristol LH, AEC Reliance, Leyland Leopard, Tiger Cub and Panther Cub. In typical Maltese fashion vehicles were often modified with different axles, engines and gearboxes, bodies rebuilt and, in some cases, replaced totally. In 1995, the livery changed to yellow/white with an orange waistband and continued so until 2011.
