In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Fine. 1st Edition. Orange-brown wrappers. Edition limited to 150 copies, this copy from the library of the author, with the Gascoyne library book-label. "For many years," writes Robin Waterfield in a publisher's note (signed "R.E.W.") on the lower cover, "David Gascoyne collected material for a book to be called Religio Poetae. The present volume is largely the fruit of that aspiration and indeed fulfils it admirably." The last of Gascoyne's books to be published in his lifetime (apart from the 18-page, 85-copy The Entrance to That Valley Stands Alone issued by Enitharmon on his birthday, 10 October), it was advertised first as coming from the Round Robin Press, not Amate/Amaté, and includes his "A Little Anthology of Existential Thought", "Meetings with Benjamin Fondane" (in Waterfield's translation, first published in Aquarius, 1987), "Essay on Léon Chestov" and "The Sun at Midnight". Most significantly, it gathers in print (for the first time in book form?) Fondane's letter to Gascoyne of July 1937, in a translation by Ramona Fotiade, author of the learned 17-page introduction. Gascoyne had mislaid it, and wrote: "I cannot say how much I regret having not been able to keep this letter, which I carried about in my pocket for years." The letter turned up, reports Fotiade, in 1996, among manuscripts in the British Library. (Roger Scott, however, editor of Gascoyne's Selected Prose 1934-1996, 1998, reports, p.136n, that it was he who found the text, copied by Gascoyne into one of his notebooks, now in the British Library, and that it was published in the Bulletin de la Société d'Etudes Benjamin Fondane in 1995.) David Gascoyne died on 25 November 2001, aged 85. His friend Robin Waterfield outlived him by little more than two months, dying on 9 February 2002, aged 87.

"I am a laundry assistant in an old peoples nursing home," Sarah Maw wrote to Robin Waterfield at the Amate Press on 12 August 1991. "I have very few interest except in my poetry writing. I write what I feel and most of my work is on the black side but it is what I see through my eyes . . . I have 566 poems to choose from if you want to see them. I am striving to make and composse the perfect poem." Her poems "came to me out of the blue", writes Waterfield in a "publisher's note", "unsolicited and unexplained. After a life time of bookishness and subservience to literary conventions and categories, I felt sure that the Amate Press should end its career with a selection of these poems which conform to no convention of literature, grammar punctuation or spelling but which seem to me to be the authentic voice of all the world's inarticulate sufferers, miraculously and courageously uttered, and deserving to be heard and preserved." Iris Murdoch commended the work as "remarkable, beautiful poems pouring forth truth about pain and death and love. A pure voice." Anne Ridler, quoted on the lower cover, noted "an authentic direct speech". "And the funeral pile / Was cast at sea / A mortified mummy / Bound in rags which was me." Some of the poems are quite disturbing. The Amate Press's career didn't "end" with Raw Material. Its last book was David Gascoyne's Existential Writings in 2001, only months before Waterfield's death.

Dedicated by Dora Green to her sisters Sophie (Mrs Robin Waterfield, wife of the publisher) and Madge (Mrs Ivor Burton) and brothers Morrison and Howard. The Rev Donald Harper (1879-1926) came to India with the Church Missionary Society in 1904, marrying four years later Mignonette Sophia (Sophie) Morrison (1878-1968), daughter of the Rev William Morrison, Vicar of Greatwell, Co Durham; she had come to Karachi as a missionary with the Zenana Missionary Society in 1903. Harper laboured unsparingly for 22 years in the Hyderabad Mission, dying of a perforated ulcer.
