First printed edition of the foundational dictionary of classical Arabic, published at Calcutta under the auspices of the East India Company. - The Persian-born lexicographer and polymath Firuzabadi was long resident in Baghdad, Damascus and Jerusalem before settling in Mecca. His famous dictionary, completed in 1410 CE, contains about 60,000 entries, including several of Yemenite origin. It served as the basis of many later European dictionaries of Arabic. The work is itself a reduction of the author's monumental lost dictionary "Al-Lami' al-mu'allam", which was said to have comprised 60 or even 100 volumes. Even in its abridged form as "al-Qamus", it became one of the defining reference works of pre-modern Arabic learning, so widely used that the term "qamus" itself entered common usage for "dictionary". - The present impression belongs to the brief but highly productive Calcutta tenure of the Yemeni philologist Ahmad al-Shirwani (1785-1840), appointed to Fort William College and entrusted with issuing canonical Arabic texts in typographic form for a new institutional infrastructure of language study. Produced over the course of three years, the four parts of the book preserve the scale and working density of the lexicon while translating manuscript habits into print culture, as seen here in the manuscript catch-titles retained to the fore-edges. Composed within the early 19th-century programme of Fort William College, this edition exemplifies the East India Company's mobilisation of printing for the training of administrators and the standardisation of oriental curricula; al-Shirwani's presswork also encompassed other landmark Arabic projects of the period. - A particularly resonant copy, omitting the English-language titles and Matthew Lumsden's English preface that are found in some copies intended for the western market, retaining the earlier armorial binding panels of the College of Fort William. - Variable browning. Volume 1 with dampstaining to outer leaves; marginal paper restoration to first two quires (pi-A) and final leaf; light marginal worming to pages 1-150 (initially two holes, reducing to one); infilled worming to fore margins of the final leaves; a few small burn-holes (e.g. to 2C2, 5O2, 6B2) occasionally obscuring a letter or word.
