Original pale pink stapled wraps black lettered with the University's emblem 15x23cm. (4)pp preliminaries including title page, calendar, contents table, and overview of Jesuit Institution…s; pp13-72 some on yellow or blue paper; (4)pp containing 8 b/w photos. Graded as poor overall, as some information called for in the unnumbered content before p13 is not present (including University Boards, Officers, Committees, Faculty), and after p72 (Appendix, Publications). There are no signs of removal, and possibly a binding error. The photo pages are additional to what is called for. The condition is otherwise generally very good with smudging to the wraps, some foxing, and several dates neatly circled in the calendar. This is nevertheless highly uncommon with Worldcat recording 2 undefined series (OCLC 892874849: Harvard, UCLA) and 1 of the 1959-60 Bulletin (OCLC 554874779). Dar Al-Hikma University was founded by Jesuits in 1956, in response to demand from graduates of the Baghdad College (est. 1932). Its Campus was located on a 168 acre plot granted by Government in the new southern suburb of Zafaraniya. Initially it offered two BSc courses in Engineering Physics and Business Administration. Its student population grew quickly from 46 to 656 by the time it closed. The student population was diverse, including Iraqi and foreign students, Muslims, Catholics, Orthodox Christians, and Jews. And staff included Jesuits, Iraqi Christian and Muslim lay teachers, Fulbright professors, and foreign volunteers. In 1962 it became co-educational. The Rector / President was Rev John P. Banks with Richard J. McCarthy taking over in 1965. The University was nationalised during the First Republic's Nasserist era with foreign staff expelled (1966-1968), and it was shut down in 1969 following the Ba'athist Coup. This issue reveals its rapid expansion with a population of 438 students by October 1964, and a much wider curriculum that introduced Civil Engineering, English, Arabic Literature, Mathematics, Philosophy, Economics, and Theology. Sections detail General Information (history, objectives, buildings and facilities, library); Student Welfare (counselling, housing, athletics, scholarships etc); Organisations and Awards (for drama, music, debating, science, maths, photography, etc); Admission; Fees; Requirements and Regulations; Curricula and Departments. The photos present an important visual record including aerial views of the Campus, Prof Louden instructing businessmen, the engineering lab, Father Larkin moderating engineers, a night view of Spellman Hall of Residence, and 1964 Graduates with Banks.
