Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Jeffrey St. Clair and Alexander Cockburn present a detailed scrutiny of the 'quality' print press and leading corporate media in the last decade, detailing a disastrous sequence of misrepresentation, suppression, ignorance and a wilful embrace of the government's agenda. The book traces the impending disintigration of what are now 'old media' and looks towards the emergence of an entirely new landscape of mass communications: one that includes a more populist approach to information dissemination.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Missionaries of the left, 'saviours' are people of privilege who believe they have all the answers. They want to help, but don t want to listen; they lead but never follow. From post-Katrina New Orleans, to anti-sextrafficking work, to do-gooder journalists, Jordan Flaherty s book reveals how this saviour mentality undermines the very causes these activists are trying to advance. Then, Flaherty shows how activists can build stronger movements using solidarity instead of charity, with examples from current movements such as Black Lives Matter.…

These women have provided intimate, anti-censorship essays, to reestablish the idea that equality of the sexes doesn't have to mean no sex. Paperback. Zustand: Good. "Nothing is more brilliant and juicy to me than a woman stepping fully into her self--mind, body, and spirit, full throttle, without apology. Kimberly Dark has been illuminating the path for a long time. This book is a triumph. This book is a jailbreak from cultural inscriptions meant to keep us locked up, shut up, and conforming." --Lidia Yuknavitch, author of The Chronology of Water and The Book of Joan Fat, Pretty, and Soon to be Old is a moving, funny, and startlingly frank collection of personal essays about what it means to look a certain way. Or rather, certain ways. Navigating Kimberly Dark's experience of being fat since childhood--as well as queer, white-privileged, a gender-confirming "girl with a pretty face," active then disabled, and inevitably aging--each piece blends storytelling and social analysis to deftly coax readers into a deeper understanding of how appearance privilege (and stigma) function in everyday life and how the architecture of this social world constrains us. At the same time, she provides a blueprint for how each of us can build a more just social world, one interaction at a time. Includes an afterword by Health at Every Size expert, Linda Bacon. Kimberly Dark is a writer, professor, and raconteur. She has written award-winning plays, and taught and performed for a wide range of audiences in various countries over the past two decades. She is the author of The Daddies, Love and Errors, and co-editor of the anthology Ways of Being in Teaching.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. A manifesto for today's broken schools. Desegregation has failed. Schools filled with black and brown students have become plantations of social control, where the policing of behavior trumps the expanding of minds. Radical teachers and organizers in American public schools must help young people fashion an insurgency. That means, at the very least, seeing each student's rebellion not as violation, but as communication. Jay Gillen writes with passion and compassion about the daily lives of poor students trapped in institutions that dismiss and degrade them. In the spirit of Paulo Freire, and using the historical models of slave rebellions and Civil Rights struggles as guides, Gillen explains what sort of insurgency is needed and how to create it: the tools and techniques required to build social, intellectual, and political power. This poetic manifesto of revolutionary "educational reform" belongs in the pocket of anyone who currently works in, suffers through, or simply cares about public schooling in this country. Jay Gillen teaches English in a Baltimore public school and has worked with the Baltimore Algebra Project since 1995, building math literacy among youth of color and youth experiencing poverty in US public schools. Bob Moses is an educator and Civil Rights activist. He founded the Algebra Project in 1982. In Oakland, California on March 24, 2015 a fire destroyed the AK Press warehouse along with several other businesses. Please consider visiting the AK Press website to learn more about the fundraiser to help them and their neighbors.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The name Salvador Puig Antich and the events surrounding the so-called Transition from fascism are famous within Spain, but largely unknown elsewhere. This collection, originally published in Catalan on the forty-fifth anniversary of Puig Antich's execution, remedies that. In the early 1970s, Salvador Puig Antich of the Iberian Liberation Movement (MIL) was engaged in a fight to the death with Franco's brutal fascist dictatorship over the future of Spain. They expropriated banks and smuggled clandestine literature in support of the growing movement of wildcat workers' strikes. In 1974, the Franco regime garroted Puig Antich--literally strangled him to death. The charge was for shooting a policeman during his arrest, the details of which were contested. Puig Antich's case became a cause célèbre internationally. This book makes sense of his life and death by placing them in their historical and political context. Some contributors describe the intensity of life in an armed group, others focus on the political debates in the MIL and the broader movement. Puig Antich's comrades speak of the contemporary strike movement, his family members recount the wait for his execution. Sometimes perspectives clash, a testament to the conflicts, debates, and contradictions that form an integral part of this history of struggle. This edition also includes a new Introduction by Peter Gelderloos for English-language readers, as well as photos, documents, a glossary, and a selection of Puig Antich's letters and other writings.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. If we want to preserve what's still left of the natural world, we need to stop using so much of it. And, says veteran environmental activist Matt Hern, cities are the best chance we have left for a truly ecological future . . . but what does it take to make a truly sustainable city? Common Ground in a Liquid City is a fun and engaging look at the future of urban life. Hern takes us on a journey through over a dozen urban centers, from Vancouver to Istanbul, Las Vegas, and beyond, exploring the history and current composition of cities around the globe and highlighting the elements of each that make it livable. Each of Hern's ten chapters focuses on a central theme of city life: diversity, street life, crime, population density, water and natural life, gentrification, and globalism. What emerges in the end is an appealing portrait of what the urban future might look like--environmentally friendly, locally focused, and governed from below. Matt Hern is an inveterate city dweller and an environmental and education activist. The editor of Everywhere All the Time: A New Deschooling Reader and the author of Deschooling Our Lives and Field Day, he founded Vancouver's Car-Free Day and is the director of the Purple Thistle Center for alternative education. These days, he lives in Vancouver with his partner and daughters and lectures widely around the globe.…
