Government of India launched a watershed development programme during the year 1983 84 with an objective to develop natural resources viz. land water vegetation and productivity of crops in addition to improvement of standard of living of the people. Based on the experience gained during 1983 90 the Watershed Development Programme has been expanded further to cover larger areas. Government of India through its Ministries of Agriculture Rural Development forestry managed the Watershed Development Programme in India. Further it was allotted even to non governmental organizations under the policy of government and private partnership so as to execute the works more effectively. However NGOs concentrated on water resource development so as to improve the irrigated area for improving the livelihood security of rural people on watershed basis unlike government departments which concentrated on overall development of natural resources and agriculture production. There are number of books covering watershed development programmes written by many authors. Hence an attempt is made to cover all aspects of watershed so as to observe and judge the effectiveness and efficiency of the watersheds based on the development of natural resources agriculture and socio economic conditions. India has tremendous potential for developing coastal aquaculture and is now the sixth largest producer of fish in the world. In land fish production it receives the second position after China. The coastal fishermen have been one of the most vulnerable group among the poor in India. Their social exclusiveness on account of geographical separation and cultural isolation contributes to accentuation of penury. The seasonal character of their vocation and its hazardous implications coupled with uncertainty of catches casts shadow on their limited livelihood opportunities compounding its cascading effect on their poverty profile. Low level of literacy cripples their bargaining capacity in the trader dominant market thus depriving them of their legitimate price compensation for the risky endeavors in the marine environment. Fisher women often occupy marginal roles and live and work on the periphery of the centres of economic social and political power they tend to be especially vulnerable. The basic goal for women in fisheries development is to make them equal partners and productive and self reliant participants in the process of improving their own and their families nutritional and living standards and to enable them to realize their full potential as human beings in their own right as members of their family and community. Fisher women must be given the opportunity to acquire appropriate knowledge develop adequate skills and use appropriate technologies enabling them to make the greatest possible economic and social contribution. Present book incorporates authentic studies on various aspects narrated above which will go a long way in sound empowerment of fisher women. 152 pp.

Mineralisation of organic phosphorus. II. Phosphate solubilising microorganisms. 3. Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhizal (VAM) biofertiliser. Selected reference. "Fertilizers have played a key role in the modernisation of Indian agriculture and in making the country self sufficient in food grain production. P is reported to be the limiting plant nutrient in soils and is considered to be the key to crop productivity. Most soils contain insoluble inorganic phosphates but they are of no use to crops unless they are solubilized. Much of the soluble phosphates applied to soils as fertilizers is fixed by the soil and rendered less available to plants. The long term application of P fertilizers has resulted in an accumulation of total soil P, most of which is poorly soluble. Phosphate Solubilizing Microorganisms (PSM) are capable of solubilizing tricalcium, aluminium and iron phosphates, as well as rock phosphate making the phosphorus present in the soil available to plants. Soils also contain organic phosphorus, which can be used by crops only if it is mineralized. Microorganisms play active part in the decomposition and mineralisation of organic matter and release of nutrients. Organisms that cause increases in plant available P in the soil system belong to a diversified group including bacteria, actinomycetes and several group of fungi. Huge investments would have to be made in fertilizer factories to meet growing demand of phosphatic fertilizers. The fertilizers so produced 224 pp.

Even after more than fifty years of development planning Indian economy continues to be agriculture based. The dependence of people on agriculture did not decline in a scale comparable to the reduction in the contribution of agriculture to the National Gross Domestic Product. Despite the significant progress in the overall development of the economy the rural urban disparities continue to be glaring. Still A very large majority of rural population dependent on agriculture and agricultural development is synonymous to rural development. Establishing Krishi Vigyana Kendras (KVK) (Farm Science Centres) is one of the key institutional innovations that sought to facilitate agricultural and rural development. Making the knowledge and other enabling resources in a relevant and readily usable form available to the rural population is the key mandate of KVK. Since the operational domain of KVK is the district where it is located it is in a better position to appreciate the local conditions. There are 580 KVKs in India to look after the rural development in their respective jurisdiction of the districts of each KVK. The KVK at CRIDA has the responsibility of contributing to the agricultural and rural development in Rangareddy District of Andhra Pradesh and is carrying out the works in collaboration with other research organizations in Hyderabad and all line Departments of State Government. This publication is an endeavour to put together information on the relevant technologies that are helpful to farm and household development. 168 pp.

The farm as an agricultural individuality. 13. Zodiac principle of biodynamic. 14. Biodynamic planting calendar and lunar and solar rhythms. Biodynamic farming is systematic and synergistic way of harnessing energies form cosmos, mother earth, plants and cow for quality production and proper maintenance of ecosystem. Biodynamic preparations are components of biodynamic farming to restore the soil and the organic matter in the form of humus, increasing microbial population, skillful application of factors contributing to soil life and health, treating manure and compost in biodynamic way. A basic ecological principle of biodynamics is to conceive the farm as an organism, a self-contained entity. A farm is said to have its own individuality. Biodynamics is an advanced organic method in which no artificial fertilizers or chemical sprays are used. The plant is influenced not just by the soil in which it grows, but by the water in the soil and the atmosphere, other plants nearby, the air around it, the amount of light and warmth it receives from the sun, and also the influences coming from other cosmic bodies, the moon, the sun, planets and stars and the entire cosmos. Central aspect of biodynmaics is that the farm as a whole is seen as an organism, and therefore should be a self-nourishing system in which humans as well as plants and animals play an integral role. The holistic system approach of biodynamics require integrated management practices -- such as crop diversification, crop rotation, use of green manures, and use of compost improved by biodynamic preparations to promote and maintain soil health.
