Trade paperback. First edition. First printing [stated]. Trade paperback (US). Glued binding. xi, [1], 159, [5] p. Notes This is one of the AEI Studies on Global Environmental Policy. Sovereign nations submit their domestic policies to international agreements and supranational institutions. This text warns that international regulation could distort the US constitutional system, and argues for reviving the traditional American view on international agreements and treaties. This book is an argument for reviving the traditional American view on the proper role of international commitments. The Framers considered that there were limites on what mattera a treaty could address, and what questions the law of nationals could settle. One of the centeral problems with international commitments is that they tend to transfer decisionmaking power away from the visible anda ccountable froums into the hand of foreign policy specialists in the executive branch. Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. First printing [stated]. xi, [3], . 317, [5] pages. Appendix: A Chronology of Change. Signed by author on the title page. Jeane Duane Kirkpatrick (née Jordan; November 19, 1926 - December 7, 2006) was an American diplomat and political scientist who played a major policy role in the foreign policy of the Ronald Reagan administration. An ardent anticommunist, she was a longtime Democrat who became a neoconservative and switched to the Republican Party in 1985. After serving as Ronald Reagan's foreign policy adviser in his 1980 campaign, she became the first woman to serve as United States Ambassador to the United Nations. She was known for the "Kirkpatrick Doctrine", which advocated supporting authoritarian regimes around the world if they went along with Washington's aims. She believed that they could be led into democracy by example. She wrote, "traditional authoritarian governments are less repressive than revolutionary autocracies." She sympathized with the Argentine government during the Falklands War when President Reagan came out in support of Margaret Thatcher. Kirkpatrick served on Reagan's Cabinet on the National Security Council, Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board, Defense Policy Review Board, and chaired the Secretary of Defense Commission on Fail Safe and Risk reduction of the Nuclear Command and Control System. She wrote a syndicated newspaper column after leaving government service in 1985, specializing in analysis of the activities of the United Nations. This was published for the American Enterprise Institute. These essays track the dramatic developments set in motion by the "perestroika revolution" of Mikhail Gorbachev, whose goal is the transformation of Soviet style communism from within. This collection does not simply recapitulate what happens but explains-step by step-which changes were important and why. They tell us when Gorbachev began to ask new questions and set new goals and what these mean for the foundations of Soviet power. The analysis reflects the author's realistic understanding of the Soviet state and ideology the legitimizes it, and also her broad personal experience with foreign leaders and foreign policy. Kirkpatrick was the first woman to serve as US representative to the UN.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. Second Printing [stated]. xviii,323, [3] pages. Illustrations. Cast of Characters. Charts. Appendices. Notes. Index. Inscribed by the author on the title page. The inscription reads For Secretary James Mattis, In great appreciation of your work, and in the tradition of our teachers, men like Mike Wyly & John Boyd. Sincerely, Laurie Mylroie Washington D.C. Correspondent Kurdistan 24. Produced by the American Enterprise Institute. This study examines Saddam Hussein's sponsorship of terror and his vendetta against the United States. Mylroie explores the evidence that Saddam Hussein may have had a role in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Laurie Mylroie (born July 22, 1953) is an American author and analyst who has written extensively on Iraq and the War on Terror. In her book Study of Revenge, Mylroie laid out her argument that the Iraqi regime under Saddam Hussein had sponsored the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and subsequent terrorist attacks. She claimed those attacks were part of an ongoing war that Saddam waged against America following the cease-fire to the 1991 Gulf War. Less than a year after her book was published, the September 11 attacks occurred. Mylroie subsequently adopted the view that Saddam had been responsible for the attacks, defending it on many occasions, including before the 9/11 Commission. Mylroie's writings are considered influential among neoconservatives during the buildup to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Several of them praised Study of Revenge, including ex-CIA Director James Woolsey, who called it "brilliant and brave" in his comment for the dust jacket of the book. James Norman Mattis (born September 8, 1950) is an American military veteran who served as the 26th United States secretary of defense from 2017 to 2019. A career Marine, he gained a reputation among his peers for intellectualism and eventually advanced to the rank of general. From 2007 to 2010, he commanded the United States Joint Forces Command and concurrently served as NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Transformation. He was commander of United States Central Command from 2010 to 2013, he commanded forces in the Persian Gulf War, the War in Afghanistan, and the Iraq War. On December 20, 2018, after failing to convince Trump to reconsider his decision to withdraw all American troops from Syria, Mattis announced his resignation effective the end of February 2019; after Mattis's resignation generated significant media coverage, Trump abruptly accelerated Mattis's departure date to January 1, 2019, stating that he had essentially fired Mattis. "Study of Revenge," the sequel to the New York Times bestseller "Saddam Hussein and the Crisis in the Gulf," co-authored by Laurie Mylroie and Judith Miller, exposes the threat Saddam Hussein still poses to Americans and challenges the Clinton administration to explain why it has obscured that threat. The Gulf War never ended for Saddam Hussein. He had already recovered sufficiently by 1993 to undertake a campaign of terror, of which only the first two acts were planned in advance: the January shootings outside CIA headquarters in Virginia and the February bombing of one tower of the World Trade Center in New York, in an attempt to topple it against its twin. "Study of Revenge" is, first of all, the story of the Trade Center bombing. Mylroie contends that the mastermind behind the bombing was an Iraqi intelligence agent, Ramzi Yousef, who escaped and left behind the Muslim fundamentalists who participated in the plot and were meant to be caught. She argues that the Clinton administration's mishandling of the event led to the emergence of a fraudulent and dangerous theory about Middle East terrorism--that it is no longer primarily state-sponsored but is carried out by individuals or "loose networks." The misunderstanding is particularly dangerous in light of the prospects for biological terrorism. In addition to her account of events around the bombing, Mylroie describes how Saddam Hussein has steadily regained strength and e.…
