Relating to the personal lives of many of the generals of the Civil War, this book melds fact with fiction and paints a picture of a time that saw a country divided. Gary Chitwood Walker was born on May 24, 1946, in Wytheville. Gary graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Science from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1968. Gary's love of history led him to investigate his family's history. This was his first serious, independent, research. It resulted in Walker, Ben to Carl. Later he researched and wrote Footprints, a history of the Adams family. With the great success of The War in Southwest Virginia 1861-65, Gary knew he had found his niche. Encouraged by the success of The War in Southwest Virginia 1861-65, Gary researched and wrote Hunter's Fiery Raid through Virginia Valleys. It is the only detailed account of Union General David Hunter's assault on Confederate military forces and on the Southern civilian population. Continuing good reviews and public requests inspired Gary to produce Civil War Tales. Civil War Tales is a delightful concoction of newly uncovered pure history, hilarious fables, heart wrenching stories and just plain bull, which all add up to give the reader a real flavor of the times. The book is based primarily on family stories passed down through the generations, but not recorded until now. The author did numerous interviews to acquire the information and flushed them out with his own personal research.
