This is the revised and enlarged edition of the book he wrote to fill the gap. Chapters include: Reservoirs and opportunities for trout fishing; The trout we hope to catch; Tackle, clothing and other equipment; Elementary casting and line control; Flies and ways of fishing them; Fishermen and fishing methods; Some chances for success; Six patterns for a season. Appendices discuss useful books, where to find information, and, associations deserving of an angler's support. .

(Hardcover, 1970). (1952) 1970 4th edition, 1979 reprint. 4to (188 x 252mm). Pp256. Colour plates, b/w illustrations. Red cloth, spine titled in gilt. Slight marks and browning to edges. Good-plus in dust-wrapper. The first, and still probably the best, of the great fly-tying compendiums. John Veniard drew on the resources of his previously published booklets, and his vast experience of fly-tying, to produce a work that would remain the standard for many years. It is worth noting that besides flies for salmon, trout and grayling, this book includes many patterns for coarse species; pike, perch, chub, dace, roach and rudd, as well as a section on flies for saltwater angling. Contents include: Tools; Hooks; Silks; Tinsels; Dyeing; Materials for trout flies; Dressing flies for trout fishing; Trout fly dressing - dry flies; Trout fly patterns - dry flies; Trout fly dressing - wet flies; Trout fly patterns - wet flies; Hair wing flies; Streamer flies; Flies for sea fishing; Flies for pike and perch; Flies for grayling; Flies for chub, dace, roach and rudd; Fly dressing materials - salmon flies; Dressing flies for salmon fishing; Salmon flies - standard patterns; Salmon flies - low water small summer patterns; Salmon flies - Dee strip wing patterns; Salmon flies - Spey patterns; Salmon flies - Irish patterns; Salmon flies - hair wing patterns; Salmon flies - grubs and dry fly patterns; Salmon flies - shrimps; Salmon flies - lures; Salmon flies - tube flies; Two indices - one to fly tying and materials, and one to fly patterns. .

Slight marks to boards, slightly bumped but good-plus, lacks dust-wrapper. "ZANDER including WHEN, WHERE, and HOW to catch zander; and the inside story of the zander controversy." Barrie Rickards and Neville Ficklings' very readable account of zander fishing and how to go about it - the first such book to be published in the UK. Although zander were first introduced in 1878, they did not flourish for many years and remained scarce. In 1963 "one hundred zander were released into the Great Ouse Relief Channel" and fingerling zander "caused a sensation in 1966/67 when they appeared in thousands." The authors probe the spread of the zander across Eastern England and discuss all aspects of its pursuit. Chapters include, river and drain zander - tackle, techniques, baits, where? when?; stillwater zander; controversy - 1978 one hundred years on, early days on the Relief Channel, spread of the zander, views of a zandophile; biology - zander in general, the European scene, British zander; facts, figures and fairy tales - zander records, the walleye, recipes. .

Buch
(Hardcover, 1979). (1958) 1979 2nd edition reprint. 8vo (141 x 222mm). Pp272. Line drawings. Green boards, spine titled in gilt. Slight use, usual page browning. Good-plus in dust-wrapper. "Frank Sawyer is well known as the keeper on a famous stretch of the Wiltshire Avon. He is also author, naturalist, broadcaster, and one of the very few people able to catch trout to the order of a television team. The result of forty years' close observation and constant practice is here set out in the most thorough, informative, and attractive manner." (Anglers' Annual 1958). This key book in the evolution of chalkstream flyfishing for trout and grayling also includes a chapter on "Lesser Quarry," on nymph fishing for chub, dace and roach; on "Experiments With Salmon"; and on "Still Waters"; and, of course, on river keeping. The second edition was completely revised and rewritten to take into account a further ten years' observation and practice with the upstream nymph. It is a great deal longer and also includes chapters on Chew and Blagdon, on fishing in Cornwall, Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Bavaria. However, it had fewer photographs than the first edition. The 1979 and 1981 reprints of the second edition used inferior materials to the 1974 and 1977 reprints, and the photographs were omitted entirely. Although they have A. & C. Black dust-wrappers and prices, and carry the same ISBN, I wonder if these printings may have been produced mainly for sale through the book clubs. .
