The years 1797, 1798, and 1799 saw a very serious outbreak of Bilious fevers in Birmingham, on page 13 of this pamphlet the author remarks " In its first stage, this fever did not appear to be contagious ; but it was evidently so after the eleventh of fourteenth day, when the typhoid state was induced . ", the author then proceeds to give " an account of the general mode of treatment . " and then gives " . notice of the management of particular symptoms ". Richard Pearson ( 1765 - 1836 ) was a physician born in Birmingham. He entered the University of Edinburgh in the autumn of 1783 and gained the degree of MD on 24 June 1786. Pearson settled in Birmingham, in June 1792 he was appointed locum tenens at the General Hospital. He resigned from Birmingham General Hospital in December 1800, it was during this period in Birmingham that he studied these fevers. This is a scarce pamphlet, ESTC ( on-line 10 / 18 ) locates only five copies in the British Isles - British Library x 2. Oxford University , Bodleian Library. Ex-libris de Antonio Borrell y Folch. * Ángel Fernández de los Ríos se dedicó activamente a la política y al periodismo, creando numerosas revistas con la idea de divulgar la cultura y hacerla llegar a todas las capas sociales. Escribió sobre política, arte, arquitectura y urbanismo, literatura, crítica de teatro, etcétera. Antes de la publicación de La Ilustración colaboró con El Semanario Pintoresco español, que de alguna manera fue su predecesor. La Ilustración fue el primer periódico de actualidades que tuvo España. Contenía un apartado para la crónica de los sucesos contemporáneos y una sección sobre las novedades técnicas y científicas, con especial atención a todo lo que se refería al ferrocarril. Publicaba obras clásicas de la literatura española y traducciones de obras extranjeras. Además contenía secciones sobre crítica literaria, teatro, música, y en los últimos números encontramos pasatiempos como el ajedrez. Fernández de los Ríos en La Ilustración no dejó de hacer periodismo de opinión, defendiendo las ideas del partido progresista y atacando los principios tradicionales, que impedían la modernización política del país.
