Abgesehen von ein paar philosophischen Miniaturen und sehr schön geschriebenen Erinnerungen an Kusmin, Anna Achmatowa, Daniil Charms, gehört allein unsere Novelle dazu. Dafür aber ist dieser Text einer der schönsten Prosatexte der russischen Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts. Diese Erzählung von 1946, die erst 2006 veröffentlicht wurde, war nicht in einem Geheimfach verborgen worden: Jedes Jahr an seinem Geburtstag, zu dem viele Dutzend Gäste kamen, die ganze kulturelle Elite Leningrads, begann die Feier damit, daß der Gastgeber Auszüge aus seiner Manon vorlas. Er verheimlichte sein Meisterwerk nicht, er reichte es nur nicht zur Publikation in sowjetischen Zeitschriften und Verlagen ein - wer weiß, warum: Weil er das für sinnlos hielt?
