Hardcover. Zustand: New. This is an exhaustive survey of the population lists, estimates, and statistics that were produced in the American colonies before the first federal census of 1790. The population lists, which are of paramount importance to the genealogist, include poll lists, tax lists, taxables, militia lists, and censuses, and were originally drawn up for purposes of taxation and local defense. Gleaned from archives in Britain and the U.S. and from a wide range of published sources, their itemization in this work puts colonial population records in a handy framework for research, much like Ann Lainhart's work on post-colonial population records below. Coverage, by the way, isn't confined merely to the original thirteen colonies, but includes population lists from territories such as the Illinois Country, Kentucky and Tennessee, and the northern and southern Indian Departments. Index, 252 pp.[2345-C].
Soft cover. Zustand: New. No Jacket. Most of the early history of the settlement of Scott County, Virginia, beginning in the mid-1700s, was marked by hostility between Indians and settlers. This extensive history gives many first hand accounts of Indian attacks, as well as harrowing tales of captivity. Daniel Boone played a significant role in the settlement of Virginia as well as the exploration and development of the Wilderness Road, which brought settlers through Virginia on their way West. Boone, leading a party of settlers to Kentucky, sojourned briefly in Virginia after his son, James, was massacred by Indians. While living in the Clinch Valley, Boone helped defend nearby settlements from Indian attacks before eventually moving his family to Kentucky. The early 1800s saw the establishment of a county court system, the selection of a county seat, the building of the first courthouse and the division of the county into government and school districts." In 1852, the Virginia & Tennessee Railroad Company was chartered to construct the first railroad to replace the Clinch and Holston Rivers as the "highways of commerce." Beginning in 1873 a number of small newspapers tried and failed before the successful publication of the Herald began in 1903. By early 1917 all classes of people began to read newspapers and periodicals. Of special interest was the war in Europe after Congress declared war on Germany and brought the war home to Scott County. Over 150 years of Scott County history comes to life in this book. (1932) reprint, 364 pp., illus., original full name + subject index, paper. [A2020] (G-50).

Hardcover. Zustand: New. No Jacket. Covering hundreds of Revolutionary War veterans of Fairfield, Connecticut, this book contains abstracts of pension records that were originally on file at the old Pension Bureau in Washington, D.C., including soldiers¿ and widows¿ applications, bounty land warrants, and rejected pension applications. Packed with information--much of it deriving from affidavits provided by friends and relatives in support of the veteran¿s application for a pension--the abstracts include some or all of the following data: name of pension applicant, place and date of birth, age, dates of enlistment and discharge, service record (sometimes very detailed but always interesting), place of residence before and after service, distinguishing characteristics, name of spouse, date of marriage, names of children, and names of parents and other family members. Technological advances notwithstanding, nowhere else can the researcher find so much information so quickly on Fairfield¿s Revolutionary War pensioners. In addition to the pension abstracts, this work also contains an exhaustive collection of muster rolls of Fairfield soldiers in the militia and Continental Army. Roll by roll, Fairfield men are identified by name, rank, and dates of enlistment and discharge, and occasionally by other details such as company, regiment, engagements, injuries, and pay. With references to about 7,500 individuals, the muster rolls and pension abstracts give a comprehensive picture of Fairfield¿s contribution to the war effort. Both sections of the book are completely indexed, with soldiers set off in a separate index. Readers may be surprised to learn that this work was originally published in 1932 as Volume III of Donald Lines Jacobus¿ History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield. Unlike the first two volumes of that famous compendium, however, it has never been reprinted. Not a compendium of family histories but a collection of source records, it stands completely independent of the first two volumes and is available now as a separate and distinct contribution to Revolutionary War genealogy. 533 pp. indexed. (1932) repr. 2004. [G-2984].
