Zustand: Good. - Octavo, softcover bound in printed gray wrappers. The wraps are bumped & lightly chipped with their edges darkened. There are creases to the bottom corners with creasing to the front edge of the rear wrap & a number of small stains to the front wrap. The spine is chipped & the rear wrap is partially detached. 48 pages. The bottom page corners are creased & some are soiled. The top page corners are lightly bumped. There are small stains to the top edge of the title with very light foxing to a few pages. Good. First edition.Writing to Levi Lincoln, Governor of Massachusetts, Gray defends Harvard against the criticisms of its detractors. There is evidence of early worming along the front hinge. An early owner's inscription, dated 1833, is penned on the front endpaper. The present volume covers molluscs, including cephalopods and gastropods. Dvigubsky (17711839) was Professor of Physics at the Imperial Moscow University, but his scientific interests ranged through biology, chemistry, and medicine. He was also the University rector for seven years. His survey of Russia's flora and fauna was the among the first attempts at a coordinated catalogue of the country's wildlife, and in 1828 he published the first Russian-language guide to the flora of Moscow and its environs. He strongly advocated both teaching and writing in Russian, and encouraged his colleagues at the university to publish their scientific works in Russian. Amongst the species represented here are the naval shipworm (Teredo navalis), the depilatory sea hare (Aplysia depilans), the sea angel, or clione (Clio borealis), and the common octopus (Octopus vulgaris). A handsome and rather curious uniform 19th century binding of full Russia boards with close matching morocco spine and corners, the transition between the two leathers demarcated by a thin blind tooled border, spines with raised bands, gilt lettered to two panels, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, an early armorial bookplate "Dieu Pour Nous" to the front pastedown, underneath which another pictorial bookplate of the (private) "Beaufoy Library". Occasional minor wear to the extremities, a handsome set.
