Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Oblong folio measuring 15" x 11". String-tied brown leather over stiff paper boards with gilt decorations. Contains 381 sepia-toned or black and white photographs measuring between 1" x 1" and 5" x 7" with captions, many on the verso. Very good album with chips, tears, and edgewear with near fine photographs. A photo album kept by a young man, E.H. Schuler, in the 1940s beginning with his time as a hired hand on Lucas Farm in Marshalltown, Iowa. The album begins with photos of turkeys on the farm and a dog that lived on the land. Following this he went to McChord Field in Tacoma to train with the Air Force during World War II. He photographed the tented encampment and his fellow corpsman while training and during their leisure time. After his initial training he went on to Fort George Wright in Spokane, Washington and photos of the Washington landscape are included in this section. At Fort Wright he trained to become a radio aide and is seen with other men and in town on short leaves. He's also seen posed with young women around town including a photo booth-style photo with a fashionably dressed woman in a hat. Eventually he was sent overseas and was stationed in the Pacific at Numfoor Island. Here he is photographed posed near exotic foliage and with island natives. He photographed natives and captioned the pictures "village building," "bartering," and under a mother breastfeeding, "Madonna." Another photo of an attractive young native woman is captioned "village Bette." While there he was repaired radios and worked with the signal corps. Other photos show planes coming and going from the base including one of "Uncle Cy's Angel" a P-39 flown by Major Cyril Filcher "Cy" Homer, seen posed by the plane. He was later transferred to the Philippines and includes photos from the plane and of the camp including men building a latrine and the shower which is said is fine even if it's "untiled." The final photos show Schuler at an American officer's club once he was back in the states. An interesting collection of photographs detailing a radio operator's training and tour of duty.
