From the text: The apas classical atlas project was conceived as the means to an end, and rightly so. Good maps were taken to be vital tools for understanding ancient history and culture at any level, and the ones available in the early 1980s were altogether woefully inadequate. The project was designed to fill this void by preparing a comprehensive atlas for publication in the not-too-distant future. To make a definitive claim at this moment that the target of publication by the end of 1999 will be met must still rank as hubris.
