A scarce and desirable map, dated in the plate.The map perpetuates the myth of California as an island which is portrayed dominating the entire west coast of North America. Australia and New Guinea are incomplete and the southern coastline of Asia extends westwards towards North America. A series of portraits of famous explorers are displayed in medallions around the map including Magellan, Dampierre, Columbus, Drake etc.A tear across the upper left quadrant has been professionally repaired and is unobtrusive. Otherwise fine, clean condition. Faint old fold lines as issued but long stored flat. Approx. 13.5" x 9" (345mm x 235mm) overall.Nicolas De Fer (1646-1720) was a well known and influential French map maker based in Paris who inherited an already successful map business from his father Antoine De Fer in 1687.
