Peter Pindar was the pen-name of John Wolcot (1738-1819) a doctor from Truro who achieved some fame in the 1780s through his gift for comic verse, in particular, verse that poked fun at the foibles of the court and royal family. Wolcot's lasting legacy is his observation that George III said 'what what' a lot. His first forays were against members of the Royal Academy. He also made many comments at the King and Queen. Further subjects include James Boswell, James Bruce and Hannah More. He had great wit and humour and was very successful at coining effective phrases. Leather bound, but in poor condition with a lot of surface wear and splitting at the spine. The back cover of Vol 2 has come away from the book, and the front cover of Vol I is held on by the strings of the binding only. There is light speckling throughout.
