This is the first of the important Hawkesworth editions, lacking Volume IX and the supplementary Volume XIV which were published in 1775 and 1779 respectively, the last of the volumes printed. Given the nearly 25-year span over which the printing took place it is remarkably difficult to find sets of this edition complete. Volumes I-VI (1755); VII (1763-4); VIII (1765); X-XI (1766); XII-XIII (1768); [lacking Volumes IX (1775) and XIV (1779)]. Full bound in contemporary mottled calf with morocco title and volume labels (through numbered I-XII) with some chipping and loss. 19th century rebacks to some volumes; more recently, damage to spines and boards have been repaired; though there is cracking and tenderness to some spines, they are now relatively stable. All volumes offered are from the First Quarto Edition except the Letters X & XI which appear to be a reprint dated the same year as the First Edition. Volume X states "New Edition," and both X & XI have a variant collation from what Teerink suggests; both appear complete. All volumes complete but for Volume VII which is lacking a half title. All 26 full-page copperplate engravings plus 4 pages of Cantata are present as called for by Teerink. Notably, the same engravings were used for the octavo editions. Only the quarto edition has a large frame around the image to make it congruous to the page size. This copy belonged to Sir John Frederick, Baronet of Burwood House and bears his very tasteful engraved bookplate in most volumes. (Teerink 87). Very Good binding.

With very occasional copper engravings, including a frontispiece to volume I. Contemporary brown speckled calf with raised bands and gilt titles to contrasting red and black labels to spines. All edges flecked red. Front free endpaper to vol. I coming loose. Moderate external wear, including some loss to labels bearing volume numbers. Head-caps pulled away; some joints just starting. A few small worm holes, not affecting text. Good overall, with excellent unblemished text blocks and high quality paper.

1766. (12mo) Very good. Twelve volumes, leather bound, the covers well aged, detached or detaching, spine labels largely intact. Bookplates; former owner's rubber stamps. Title-page of volume 3 half missing. All volumes internally, despite some inevitable offsetting, remarkably square and clean. Copper-plates and Gulliver's maps very good indeed.

Twelve vols., 8vo., with 26 engraved plates, and four plates of engraved music; some variations to the publishers named in each imprint (see Teerink-Scouten for details); title-pages printed in red and black; occasional marginal dampstains (particularly to volume VI), but a very good set in contemporary calf, slightly rubbed.The large octavo first Hawkesworth edition of Swift's works, which preceded the quarto edition of 1755, complete in twelve volumes but later expanded to twenty-five by 1779 with the addition of Letters etc. This was one of the two most important eighteenth-century editions of Swift, published in competition with Faulkner's Dublin edition.Teerink-Scouten 88.
