Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The first all-primary source reader in labour history published in nearly 100 years. This book presents excerpts from 54 primary sources to blend labour history's traditional focus on the growth of a union movement with windows into all aspects of workers' lives -- their workplaces, unions, home lives and culture -- the engaging sections mirroring the great diversity of the American workforce from their colonial era to the present. Arranged into 4 parts, each of which begins with an original overview of the corresponding period in American history, this unique compilation of edited documents -- each of which is preceded by a contextual introduction -- offers students the opportunity to explore for themselves how specific events as well as general trends in American labourers, slaves, servants, mill hands, prostitutes, assembly-line workers, office temps, fast-food employees, or union leaders. While its organisation and diverse range make it an excellent companion to the publisher's popular 'Labor in America' this book can also stand alone or serve as an engaging supplement for any course in labour or US history. …

Hardback. Zustand: Good. "A must-read for today's politics" (San Francisco Chronicle), the brilliant and provocative essays that established National Book Award finalist Sarah Smarsh as one of the most important commentators on America's class problem are collected in one searing and insightful volume. In Bone of the Bone, Sarah Smarsh brings her graceful storytelling and incisive critique to the challenges that define our times--class division, political fissures, gender inequality, environmental crisis, media bias, the rural-urban gulf. Smarsh, a journalist who grew up on a wheat farm in Kansas and was the first in her family to graduate from college, has long focused on cultural dissonance that many in her industry neglected until recently. Now, this thought-provoking collection of more than thirty of her highly relevant, previously published essays from the past decade (2013-2024)--ranging from personal narratives to news commentary--demonstrates a life and a career steeped in the issues that affect our collective future. "A compassionate look at working-class poverty in America" (Time), Bone of the Bone is a singular work covering one of the most tumultuous decades in civic life. Timely, filled with perspective-shifting observations, and a pleasure to read, Sarah Smarsh's essays--on topics as varied as the socioeconomic significance of dentistry, laws criminalizing poverty, fallacies of the "red vs. blue" political framework, working as a Hooters Girl, and much more--are an important addition to any discussion on contemporary America.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. In the 1920s, thousands of white migrants settled in the Los Angeles suburb of South Gate. Six miles from down-town and adjacent to Watts, South Gate and its neighboring communities served as L.A.'s Detroit, an industrial belt for mass production of cars, tires, steel, and other durable goods. Blue-collar workers built the suburb literally from the ground up, using sweat equity rather than cash to construct their own homes. As Becky M. Nicolaides shows in My Blue Heaven, this ethic of self-reliance and homeownership formed the core of South Gate's identity. With post-World War II economic prosperity, the community's emphasis shifted from building homes to protecting them as residents tried to maintain their standard of living against outside threats - including the growing civil rights movement - through grassroots conservative politics based on an ideal of white homeowner rights. As the citizens of South Gate struggled to defend their segregated American Dream of suburban community, they fanned the flames of racial inequality that erupted in the 1965 Watts riots.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Selected writings by Julius Deutsch, leader of the workers' militias, president of the Socialist Workers' Sport International and a spokesperson for the Austrian workers' temperance movement, which details the nearly-forgotten Austromarxist era of the 1920s.
