Buch
Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This open access book examines from a variety of perspectives the disappearance of moral content and ethical judgment from the models employed in the formulation of modern economic theory, and some of the papers contain important proposals about how moral judgment could be reintroduced in economic theory. The chapters collected in this volume result from the favorable reception of the first volume of the Virtues in Economics series and represent further contributions to the themes set out in that volume: (i) examining the philosophical and methodological fallacies of this turn in modern economic theory that the removal of the moral motivation of economic agents from modern economic theory has entailed; and (ii) proposing a return descriptive economics as the means with which the moral content of economic life could be restored in economic theory. This book is of interest to researchers and students of the methodology of economics, ethics, philosophers concerned with agency and economists who build economic models that rest in the intention of the agent.

First edition, first printing, presentation copy from the author to his elder brother Robert Cloyd Quine and his wife Rosalie, inscribed on the front free endpaper "To Rosalie & Bob with love. Van". "In 1941 Quine turned to the modalities, the notions of necessity and possibility, and argued that they are hopelessly unclear. Gradually, Quine strengthened his arguments against the modalities, until in Word and Object (1960) he showed that, when modality is combined with quantification, modal distinctions collapse. That is, everything that is possible is true, and everything that is true is necessary" (ANB). Octavo. Original green cloth, spine and front cover lettered in black. Light sunning to spine, minor soiling to spine and top edge, light discolouration to front endpapers and pp. 1/2. A very good copy.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First edition. 8vo. [8], ix-xv, [1], 1-294, [2] pp. Light green cloth with twin gold rules, black lettering, and publisher's device in blind on the front board, twin gold rules and both gold lettering and black lettering on the spine. Part of The Studies in Communication Series. Slater 742. With a card signed by Quine laid in. The card measures 7.5 c.m. x 12.5 c.m. W.V.O. Quine was a distinguished philosopher who spent the majority of his career at Harvard and was widely recognized as one of the leading analytic philosophers of his era. A student of Carnap, Quine was an extraordinarily influential analytic philosopher, known for propagating the Verification Theory of Meaning, empiricism, and the examination of philosophical problems using scientific principles. Word and Object explores how human language affects ontology and our objective understanding of the world, how words refer to their objects, translation and indeterminacy, language and logic, and more. A nice copy of this well-known work from one of the most important philosophers of the twentieth century. Jacket lightly toned on its spine panel, and with a few closed tears.

First edition, first printing, inscribed by the author to his parents on the front free endpaper "To Mom & Dad with love. This copy originates from a large number of Quine family books, recently dispersed on the market. The collection included another copy of the same book, also inscribed to Quine's parents, and then additonally inscribed underneath by Quine again to James F. Tyler in 1989. Quine perhaps mistakenly inscribed two copies to his parents, presented this, and retained the other, until he found a use for it with the new inscription to Tyler. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine and front cover lettered in black. With dust jacket. Cloth discoloured and sunned, a good copy in jacket entirely split and very worn, but left unrestored and unrepaired.
