Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Poetry. Winner of the Washington Prize. Chee Brossy's second collection continues his exploration of the everyday, the sacred, and the way our humanity and language itself bring those two realms into continual dialogue. In Word-Made World, the poems leap from the page in narrative fire that exposes the evils of American history while cherishing the uniting forces of nature, ancestry, and community.

In den WarenkorbTwelfth edition of Hoole's version of Comenius's Visible World, a picture book illustrating Latin and vernacular vocabulary, here with English and Latin texts in parallel columns. Originally published in Nuremberg in 1658 with text in German and Latin, the work is the first widely used children's textbook with pictures. Hoole's version for English speaking children was first published in 1659. "Comenius's simple encyclopedic format, consisting of keyed pictures with descriptive columms of bilingual text, reflects his progressive educational approach, as does the richly varied content. An early effort at integrated text and pictures, it was grounded in sensory learning, and was devised by Comenius to promote his educational philosophy of pansophy, based on his belief that children should achieve full comprehension of the divine order on earth, creating a path of knowledge and faith that would lead humanity away from war and oppression." (Loker & Shefrin). "After an illustrated alphabet which is expressed in terms of animal and other noises, each picture shows a group of numbered objects int heir context, ranging from the solar system to a tailor's shop. Then come the names of the objects, with descriptions. The introdcution recommends that the book be freely given to children, even at home before they are put to school, 'to delight withall as they please, with the sight of the pictures'." (Carpenter & Prichard). ESTC T13161. One Hundred Books famous in Children's Literature 1B (1659 edition). Carpenter & Prichard: The Oxford Companion to Children's Literature (1995). Octavo (168 x 102 mm). 153 woodcut illustrations, text in Latin and in English. Contemporary sprinkled sheep, manuscript label to spine, edges lightly speckled red. Ownership signatures of one John Pratt of Orpington, dated 2 September 1784, to front endpapers. Joints and extremities rubbed, some surface abrasion to sides; a very good copy.
