WSNs operate unattended in harsh environments with limited energy supplies that can't be practically changed or recharged. Thus energy efficiency is a critical design issue which must be addressed.Clustering plays an effective role in judicious use of dwindling energy resources of the deployed sensor nodes. Nodes are grouped into clusters and a specific designated node, called the cluster head is responsible for collecting data from the nodes in its cluster, aggregating them and sending to the BS, where data can be retrieved later. Besides energy efficiency, clustering has many other advantages like reduced routing overhead, conservation of communication bandwidth, stabilized network topology, network stability etcIn this research, we study the energy efficiency of two clustering algorithms, S-Web and LEACH and compare them for network lifetime. Simulation results show that the S-Web clustering mechanism achieves a noticeable improvement in the network lifetime.

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) detect environmental information with sensors in remote settings. One problem facing WSNs is the inability to resupply power to these energy-constrained devices due to their remoteness. Therefore to extend a WSN's effectiveness, the lifetime of the network must be increased by making them as energy efficient as possible. An energy-efficient medium access control (MAC) can boost a WSN's lifetime. This research creates a MAC protocol called Adaptive sensor Medium Access Control (AMAC) which is based on Sensor Medium Access Control (SMAC) [YHE02] which saves energy by periodically sleeping and not receiving. AMAC adapts to traffic conditions by incorporating multiple duty cycles. Under a high traffic load, AMAC has a short duty cycle and wakes up often. Under a low traffic load, AMAC has a longer duty cycle and wakes up infrequently. The AMAC protocol is simulated in OPNET Modeler using various topologies. AMAC uses 15% less power and 22% less energy per byte than SMAC but doubles the latency. AMAC is promising and further research can decrease its latency and increase its energy efficiency.

Neuware - This research examines energy and error performance tradeoffs in Anchor-Free Range-Aware Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) Localization algorithms in different network environments. A concurrent and an incremental algorithm (Anchor Free Localization (AFL) and Map Growing) are examined under varying network sizes, densities, distribution methods, and range error conditions. Despite current expectations, even the most expensive configurations do not expend significant amounts of battery life (at most 0.4% of a typical node battery). This implies very little energy conservation is possible during localization which is contrary to significant current research that tries to provide accurate localization while conserving energy usage. AFL is twice as accurate but uses up to 6 times more communication. AFL's position refinement phase adds 700 - 2500 messages but significantly reduces error. Map Growing averages 35 total messages. For both, node degree is the single most important factor, accounting for over 90% of the variation in communication. As node degree increases, Map Growing communication increases, while AFL transmissions drop. During refinement, nodes with more neighbors refine quicker using fewer messages. Between degree 12 and 16, many nodes receive the same message. This effect overpowers the previous resulting in more AFL received bits. Other factors have little effect on communication. Network size dramatically degrades Map Growing accuracy but has little effect on AFL. Built from simulation data, the Energy Consumption Model predicts the energy usage of incremental and concurrent algorithms used in networks with varying size, density, and deployment methods.

Additionally, effective search protocols must scale efficiently and consume a minimum of network energy and memory reserves. A novel search protocol, the Trajectory-based Selective Broadcast Query protocol, is proposed. An analytical model of the protocol is derived, and an optimization model is formulated. Based on the results of analysis and simulation, the protocol is shown to reduce the expected total network energy expenditure by 45.5 percent to 75 percent compared to current methods. This research also derives an enhanced analytical node model of random walk search protocols for networks with limited-lifetime resources and time-constrained queries.
